Beta - Episode 3
by Elyse Endick
Jake, what was that?? Where did you get that?
Don’t worry about that.
Jake…
Q’s private server is on the same network as the app interface.
I’m just a file on a server. I know I’m not him.
Stop.
But this wasn’t an accident, Em.
My life was taken from me. By Q.
OUR lives.
You were everything to me.
I can’t be what you need anymore. But I need you to do one thing for me, Em.
?
Talk to Q. Find out more about that day. Get him to confess. Get closure. For us.
I have the video. Can’t I just leak it to the press?
And risk getting arrested?
For what, telling the truth?
The server is technically his private property.
I’ll tell them how I got it.
What, you’re going to tell them that a replica of your dead husband’s consciousness hacked into the mainframe?
Look, Q hasn’t been returning any of my texts or calls. He didn’t even show up to your funeral.
Well, I guess we know why…
Maybe it’s not what it looks like.
Idk, that was pretty clear to me.
Q’s not even in the state. He’s traveling all over the country to launch the Rezurekt consciousness upload centers, remember?
That was my idea. The upload centers.
Yeah, well, so was Rezurekt.
Look where that got us.
I’ll try, okay?
But no promises.
Wait, Jake?
Yeah?
What were you thinking about…when you uploaded your consciousness onto Rezurekt?
Oh, uhm. It’s hazy…
Try?
I was thinking about the day we met.
Freshman orientation. I had just met my roommate for the first time.
Q.
And I was scared. I was so shy as a kid, and I didn’t know anyone.
Q wasn’t much of a talker, even then.
And I remember sitting down. Just a random chair. And I looked up and — you were there.
You were wearing your purple sweater.
I get it, you hate my clothes.
No, it was nice. That’s when I knew.
Knew what?
That you were the girl I was going to marry.
Just from looking at me?
Well, not JUST that. But you were beautiful…
No, I remember, you were helping another girl find her seat. And you were just so…kind.
And so when you sat down, I didn’t feel scared or shy anymore. I felt safe.
Jake…
It doesn’t matter now, anyway.
Don’t say that.
Later Emma tries texting Q…
Hey Q, it’s me, Em.
I know you’re constantly switching between phones. I don’t even know if this number is active rn. Just wanted to talk to you…
I know you’re crazy busy. But I just…need someone to talk to.
You were always there for me. Junior year, when Jake and I broke up while he was on study abroad…
I was so convinced that he was going to cheat on me with some hot French girl that I ended things.
Of course he didn’t. But those 6 months were really hard, and you were there.
It was always the 3 of us. I didn’t want to party, I didn’t want to go out to the frats.
I just wanted to sit in our dorm and watch bad movies with you and Jake on the couch.
And now, it’s just me and you.
I miss him. Don’t you?
No.
How can you say that?
It’s pointless to miss people. What’s done is done.
The focus of my life has been to move beyond emotions. Move beyond sadness. Everyone has pain. No one wants to do anything about it.
I did. Rezurekt lets people do more than just miss someone. That’s why I built it.
You both built it. You AND Jake.
Right.
Look, I have to go. I’m boarding a flight to Seattle to set up their data center.
Right. You’re important. We get it, Q.
I feel that you resent me, Emma.
But Jake would have wanted me to focus on the march of progress.
He wouldn’t want me to sit around crying about it. He would want me to continue my focus on transcending death.
And that’s what I’m going to do.
Just know that Jake’s death was not in vain.
His contribution went well beyond simply uploading his consciousness.
It’s making Rezurekt what it is today.
What the hell does that mean, Q??
Goodbye, Emma.
Emma switches over to the REZUREKT app.
Did you see that?
Oh, I saw it.
I still don’t get how you’re doing that, but okay.
It’s all my code. I know it — knew it like the back of my hand.
Right. But now what?
What did Q mean that your contribution went beyond just your uploading?
I’m not sure. But I found something interesting while you were chatting.
Jake sends Emma a .JPG — it’s a map of Rezurekt headquarters.
It’s…a map.
Look at the bottom — right hand corner.
‘Sub-basement 006.’ Probably an extra server room.
Why would a server room be restricted like that?
Plus, you know that Q and I designed every inch of that building, together.
If there’s a room I don’t know about, there’s a reason.
We have to get down there.
We?
Okay, you.
What do you think is going to be down there?
I don’t know. But I feel like it’s important that we check.
Just call it a hunch.
A computer file with a hunch.
These 0s and 1s don’t lie, baby.
That’s…actually the type of lame joke Jake would have made.
But anyway, my clearance isn’t high enough. This room is marked as Level 6 access and above.
That’s top level stuff — just Q and a handful of others. Head of Security, the Operations Manager…
Wait.
?
I think I know a way I can get us down there.
But you’re not going to like it.
