Number 1 - Episode 1
by Ruth Lauren
Did someone slide an invitation under your door?
How did you know?!
Did you get one too?
Yes!
Does yours have a red wax seal?
Yeah!
Omg, Payton got the same one too.
She just messaged me about it.
Are you going?
Going where? I didn’t even read it yet!
I literally just found it.
Anna breaks the wax seal and opens the card.
There’s a short note written in blood red calligraphy.
It reads: First one to the basketball bleachers wins the prize.
Anna snaps a pic and sends it to Carrie.
Does yours look like this?
Yes! It’s exactly the same!
Payton’s too.
So are you going to the bleachers?
I don’t know. It doesn’t say who it’s from…
…Or what the prize is.
Seems kind of creepy when you think about it.
But Anna hurriedly pulls on her jacket.
She grabs her car keys.
If there’s a prize to win, she wants it.
Yeah, you’re right.
It IS creepy.
And it could be dangerous.
Or, it could just be one of the guys messing with us.
Yeah, it’s probably that.
I mean, it sounds like a competition.
And everyone knows we’re done being competitive with each other.
Exactly. You and me and Payton are past that now, right?
Totally. We’re never going to let anything come between us again.
Anna throws her car in drive, heading to the high school.
We already run the school.
There’s no need to compete.
I bet the note is just someone messing with us.
Trying to break us apart.
So they can take over.
So you’re not going to the bleachers then?
No way.
Are you?
Like you said, we are DONE being competitive.
What about Payton?
I don’t think she’s going anywhere tonight.
That’s good.
I’m glad she’s not being moody about being Number 3.
What do you mean?
I’m Number 1.
You’re Number 2.
Payton’s Number 3.
Everyone at school knows it.
But it was making us weaker fighting about it.
I’m glad you and Payton have accepted it now.
Aren’t you?
Yeah. I’m really happy with my decision.
Anna reaches the high school.
The place is deserted.
All the lights are turned off.
She sneaks in through the side entrance…
And onto the basketball court.
The bleachers are dark.
But there’s a knife sticking out of the wooden bench.
A folded note is pinned under the knife.
Anna looks around.
Carrie and Payton aren’t there.
Suddenly Anna’s cellphone pings.
She jumps.
So do you want to hang out tonight?
Sure!
I’ll be right over.
Anna grabs the knife.
So she can get the note.
Then she drops the knife.
And opens the note.
It reads: Congratulations!
You’re the winner.
This time.
If you want to keep winning…
Come to the pool.
Anna sighs.
The pool is on the other side of the campus.
But she wants to win.
She gets up to leave…
But then doubles back, grabbing the note.
She doesn’t trust Carrie or Payton.
They might turn up at the bleachers.
And if she takes the note with her…
They won’t know to go to the pool.
Anna’s cell pings again.
So did you get that invitation?
Yeah.
AND??
And what?
Where are you right now?
I bet I know 😉
Why? Where are you?
I asked first.
Come on, Anna.
Aren’t you tempted? 😈
Don’t you want to know what the prize is?
No!!
We made a promise.
We aren’t going to compete anymore.
Aren’t you sick of all the fighting?
I thought we agreed.
We did.
I’m just checking, that’s all.
Chill.
Do you not trust me or something?
I just know you like to win!
Anna gets to the pool.
Whatever.
I’ve got to go.
She looks through the window.
The pool is dark.
She can’t see anything in there.
But the door is partly open.
Hello?
She steps through the door.
And water falls on her.
She yells.
And looks up.
A bucket was balanced on the top of the door.
She can make out the shadow of it, swinging from a rope.
She mutters under her breath.
Is this some kind of joke?
This better be worth my time…
Oh, it is.
Anna jumps.
Who’s there?
Carrie steps forward.
What are you doing here?
What about you?
You told me you weren’t coming.
You told me the same!
I can’t believe you!
Is Payton here too?
Carrie looks down at the pool.
You could say that.
Anna looks down at the pool…
And SCREAMS.
Payton is floating face down in the water.
And the pool water looks darker than it should be…
What happened?!
Looks to me like someone killed Payton.
But I just talked to her a minute ago!
Did you?
Carrie holds a cellphone up.
It has a pink case.
Just like Payton’s cellphone.
I was talking to you?
Oh my god, Carrie!
Did you kill Payton?
Me?
Of course not.
Who did then?
It was you.
Are you crazy?
I just got here!
I obviously couldn’t have killed her.
That’s not what the police are going to think though.
What are you talking about? I’ll just tell them the truth.
That you killed Payton.
No, I’ll tell them the truth.
That YOU did it.
And you seriously think they’ll believe you?
Won’t they?
Think about it.
I have proof.
Anna gapes at her silently.
Put it together, Anna.
Didn’t you find the note in the bleachers?
So what?
It was just a note.
Yes, but how did you get the note?
I pulled the knife out so I could get it.
Carrie raises her eyebrows.
A knife doesn’t prove anything.
It does when it’s the knife I used to kill Payton.
Especially since now, it’s covered in your fingerprints.
And what do you think is all over your clothes?
What?
Anna looks at her clothes.
What she had thought was water…
Is actually blood.
She suppresses another scream.
Yup. That’s Payton’s blood.
Anna looks at her jacket in horror.
She takes it off…
And flings it on the floor.
It’s too late for that.
The police will find YOUR jacket, covered in PAYTON’S blood.
It doesn’t look good.
Why…why are you doing this to me?
Carrie shrugs.
I didn’t feel like being Number 2 anymore.
And that meant that Number 1 had to go.
YOU have to go, Anna.
Carrie looks back down at Payton.
It’s a shame Number 3 had to pay for that to happen.
But you know how it is…
Anything to win.
You can’t be serious.
You killed Payton to take my place ruling the school?
You can’t DO this!
I’m pretty sure I already did.
It’s like you said, Anna.
We’re done with being competitive.
Sirens sound in the distance.
There’s no competition anymore.
Because I won.
The police pull up outside the pool.
Carrie steps back into the shadows.
Bye, Anna.
I think I’m going to enjoy being Number 1…
