Swipe Right - Episode 5
by Lauren Hawkeye
Your logic is faulty.
Excuse me?
When you said that you couldn’t build a relationship off a shared interest in Nickelback and tea.
I thought we agreed to disagree about that.
No. We disagreed, full stop.
But I have something that will change your mind.
Not possible.
Give me one more chance.
You’re making this very difficult.
That’s kind of the point.
Katie knows that she shouldn’t even be talking to Noah, but she’s intrigued.
She can’t deny how happy she is that he texted again.
How, exactly, are you going to prove this to me?
Meet me at the Centre City Arena in an hour.
Why there? It’s going to be packed.
There’s a concert tonight.
Yes. And do you know which concert?
Nickelback.
But I can’t afford to go.
Wait, DO NOT tell me you have tickets to Nickelback.
Fine, I won’t tell you.
Just be there, okay?
Why? Why would you do something so sweet after I broke up with you?
Because I’m proving my point to you.
Come on, how many other Nickelback-loving guys do you think are out there?
We have this in common, and because of that, we’re going to have fun tonight.
And people who make plans over and over again, people who have fun together…
Those people are in a relationship.
Katie feels her stomach flip-flop.
She likes Noah.
She wants to see him again.
But their entire relationship is based on a lie…her lie.
Her phone buzzes.
Looking forward to reading your article.
Katie knows that this is her last chance.
And she knows what she has to do.
Noah’s phone buzzes.
It isn’t Katie, but deep in his gut, he knows she’ll be there tonight.
You there?
For a few minutes.
I come bearing news.
And?
Your job is safe.
WHAT?
NO.
How the hell did you manage that?
I just talked to my dad.
What did you say?
You did NOT have to do that!
It’s not a big deal.
TELL ME!!
Fine.
I told my dad that I would take a pay cut so that you could stay.
What? Why would you do that?
I don’t want to work there without you.
You’re the only thing that makes the job bearable.
I…don’t know what to say.
Thank you.
Now you can keep the job no matter how our campaign turns out.
So you can be with Katie, and she’ll never have to know about the plan we had.
I think…I don’t think I can do that.
What? Why?
Because I want this to be a real relationship.
So I need to be honest with her. I think I need to tell her the truth.
Wow, you’re right, man.
Well, good luck. Go get her!
An hour later, Noah meets Katie outside the Centre City Arena.
She seems nervous to him, but he doesn’t think she could possibly be as nervous as he is.
They watch the opening act, side-by-side.
It’s deafeningly loud, but Noah needs to get his lie off his chest.
So he texts her.
I have something I need to tell you.
Me, too.
I have something to tell you, I mean.
You go first.
I don’t want to. LOL.
Okay, I will, then.
I work for Swipe.
What?
Swipe…like the app, where we met?
Yes. I work in the marketing department.
My job was to set up a profile to find a girl to start a relationship with.
I’m trying to advertise the fact that Swipe is good for more than just hookups.
I see.
I liked you from the start. I actually liked you.
But I also really needed this job.
Aren’t you afraid I’ll break up with you now that you’ve told me the truth?
Of course I am. But it’s the only way I’ll know if you still want to be with me.
If this is real.
Okay, but if I get mad…
What happens to your campaign then? And your job?
My co-worker’s job with Swipe is secure.
He took a pay cut so that I could stay regardless of the campaign results.
That means that you didn’t have to tell me this.
No, I didn’t.
But I was sick of the lies.
Wow, that’s really…
I guess I should tell you my thing though. Because I’ve been lying, too.
I work for Single in the City.
The online magazine?
That’s the one.
I’ve been working on an article about how you CAN’T find love on Swipe.
I’m ashamed of it now…but I’ve been trying my best to drive you away.
The Lady Yo-Ga Ga class?
Uh-huh.
The Tupperware?
Yup.
Do you actually get seasick?
No. I love boats.
Wow.
I was not expecting that.
They turn to look at each other.
There’s a break in the set, so Katie asks Noah a question, her voice tentative.
Are you…mad?
How can I get mad at you when I did the same thing?
Are YOU mad?
I guess…same answer.
Katie smiles. It’s Noah’s favorite thing in the world.
Thank you for telling me the truth, even though you didn’t have to.
I meant what I said though, when we were messaging each other at the beginning.
That that I think Swipe has the potential for more than just hookups.
And if we’re starting something more here…
I want to do it without any lies.
They look at one another again.
Nickelback hits the stage, and Noah and Katie lean together for a soft first kiss.
And it seems to go on forever.
When they pull back, both are flushed and smiling.
Wait. My job is safe now because of Ian. But what about yours?
What are you going to do?
I don’t care. I told my editor to publish something else.
You know how I’ve been wanting to start my own online magazine anyway?
Noah nods.
I guess I’ll just do it without the big bang that this article would have made.
Are you sure that you want to quit?
Yes. Absolutely.
Then I think I have an idea to launch your own online magazine that will benefit both of us…
Katie grabs Noah’s hand and smiles.
One week later, Noah clicks on the link his girlfriend Katie sent him.
REAL LIFE LOVE STORIES
Thank you for checking out the debut article from the hot new online magazine about finding love in the big city!
This article is presented in partnership with Swipe.
Yes, that Swipe…the app that you thought was good for nothing more than 2 a.m. booty calls.
Or afternoon delights. Or a post-dinner rendezvous. You get what I’m saying…
When I created a profile on Swipe, I wasn’t expecting to find anymore more.
But guess what?
I found love on this so-called hookup.
This is the story of what can happen if you just take a chance and swipe right…
