"Be Home Soon" - Part 6
by Carkle Nesting
Moff... We were right.
Should have seen it from the start.
Still have an open line of communication?
Yeah, texting him from Hope's phone.
He's more dangerous than we thought. Hope's life is at stake.
Where is he? I'll call in the back up now.
I don't think it's going to be that easy.
What do you mean?
Listen, I have a plan, but we're going to have to do this one alone...
10 Minutes Earlier...
...And you must be Ethan.
Listen detective, it's best if you stay out of this.
Where's Hope? Get her back to us and maybe we can make a deal.
I think it's too late for that.
It's not too late. No one else needs to get hurt.
I don't want to hurt her. But she made a mistake calling you.
I'm serious detective. Stay out of this and no one gets hurt. I've come too far to stop now.
unlisted numbers, the elaborate staged kidnapping... You've been planning this for a while.
And?
Where's Jessie?
She's dead.
The same way you are "dead"?
Listen to me, by the time the sun comes up, I will be long gone. You're going to make sure of it.
Otherwise, things won't end well for Hope.
Did she know about your affair with Jessie?
Did Mike know?
Stop changing the subject detective. You can either find Hope alive or with her brains on the pavement.
I mean, he was your partner. Was sleeping with his wife really not enough for you? You had to kill him too?
You don't know what you're talking about! Don't test me!
That part wasn't your idea. That's what Jessie wanted you to do, wasn't it?
I WILL KILL HER. Try me!!
Your own wife? What happened to you?
Don't act like you know me. If you want her back, you can have her.
But if you call for backup or try anything, I kill her. Right here, right now.
Where is right here?
Do you think I'm stupid?
Here is the deal. From now on, Jessie is dead. Ethan is dead. You drive to the house on Kingswood, park in front of the house, and smash this phone on the pavement.
Then, you get Hope back.
And then what? You and your mistress ride off into the sunset?
How do I know you'll hold up your end of the bargain?
you don't.
But if you show up alone, smash the phone, and don't try anything stupid, you can have Hope. Alive.
But if you don't do EXACTLY as I say, she is dead, and I still ride off into the sunset.
Do we understand each other?
Deal. I'm on the way now. Alone.
Don't lie to me. I will know if you do. And you will hear that gunshot ringing in your ears for the rest of your life. Like you pulled the trigger yourself.
Just bring the girl.
Now:
I'm 2 minutes out. Are you in position?
Yes, you're sure this will work?
Yes, just keep texting me and keep your phone on silent.
You're lucky I didn't make it far from the house in the first place. Walking back here was a bitch.
Is the car well hidden? He has to see that I'm alone.
Yes, 2 blocks away.
You realize this is obviously a trap right? He hasn't shown up yet.
He won't. This is his chance to take me out and skip town.
Heads up, stay sharp. Looks like a woman walking down the road to the east.
Headed towards you, walking slow. Maybe a block away.
message from him. He says she dies if I don't smash the phone.
I have to stall him if you're going to find him.
I'm heading her direction, staying low in the woods, north side of the street. Lots of tree cover. Making a wide loop behind her.
Don't get spotted. He can see me typing, need to keep short so he thinks I'm only texting him.
Keep him occupied, I only get one shot at this.
I told him I have to go make sure she's ok, then I smash the phone.
I'm behind her now, still no sign of him.
Keep stalling him, I can find him.
No time left.
Plan B.
No no no, not yet, I can still find him!
When I smash the phone, get ready.
Shit... Don't screw this up.
now!
Fields, now only feet from Hope, lunges towards her, tackling her to the ground.
Clutching the confused woman tightly to his chest, he rolls quickly behind the nearest car just as a bullet narrowly misses them both.
Moffet turns quickly as three more shots ring out in quick succession, bullets ricocheting loudly off the compact car shielding the killer's targets.
As he searches for the source of the sound piercing the early morning silence on Kingswood Avenue, he suddenly sees him.
With a hunting rifle tucked firmly under one arm, Ethan fires off 4 more shots at the pair struggling to find cover on the street.
He never sees the other detective as Moffet draws his gun and aims...
The sound of one final, thunderous gunshot echoes off the trees as the man falls backwards onto the wet ground, blood covering the tree he had used for cover...
As the sound of the final shot fades away, Moffet lowers his gun and walks slowly toward the man that, only hours ago, he and Fields had been trying to rescue.
In the end, no one could truly save Ethan from himself...
4 DAYS LATER
How's she doing?
Still rattled, but she's hanging in there.
Just finished my report. Just can't believe we didn't see it sooner.
What's done is done. We saved Hope and stopped Ethan before anyone else got between him and his adulterous fantasy.
The things we do for love.
Speaking of Ethan, any update on his condition?
Medical says he's still in critical condition. They think he will make it, but he won't be the same.
We hope not.
No, I mean like he will never walk again. I think my shot got him in the spine.
Well, it was your only choice.
Either way, we're still missing a piece to this puzzle.
This isn't over until we find Jessie.
We can assume she was behind it as much as he was. And she's still out there.
We're going to find her Moff, and she's going to answer for her part in this.
She could be anywhere in the world by now.
Trust me Moff...
She'll be home soon.
