The Order of the Fox Tooth - Episode 2: THE BREAKING
by Caroline Renee Mills
NO.
It's not Kate. It can't be Kate!
It's her, Andrea.
And she looked sick.
OMG.
Shit.
You gotta get her out, Emily!
Please. Help Kate!
Talk to her.
Tell her to leave with you.
I think she's in too deep, Andrea.
I doubt she'll walk out of here of her own volition.
How do you know?
You said you heard her crying in the cell.
She's miserable there.
You said she looked traumatized and sick.
Please!
I didn't tell you what she was saying while she cried.
Huh? What was she saying?
"Mea culpa, mea culpa."
Over and over again.
She feels guilty?
I guess.
Why?
I think she's brainwashed like the rest of them.
Can you call your mom?
I don't know.
Her health has gotten worse since dad died and it could upset her too much.
I'm afraid the news that Kate's in danger could kill her.
What about Sasha?
You could tell her you're friends with me.
Tell her Kate is my sister.
Beg her to help us.
Sasha seems like a zombie sometimes.
And if she faked her own death to get away from her friends and family, I'd say she's committed to the cult.
I doubt she'd help us.
Can we call 911?
And say what?
Kate is 18. She's not a minor anymore.
She's here of her own free will.
The cops can't arrest Derek for that.
He locked her in a cell!
I think she went in there willingly.
She seemed pretty cooperative when I saw her.
Sick, but submissive.
What the fuck are we gonna do, Em?
Look, I will stay here with Kate.
I'll keep pretending to like Derek.
But clearly he's psycho if he's involved in this crap and I'm breaking up with him after we get Kate out.
I'll act really interested in the cult and all vulnerable and stuff.
I'll talk to Kate somehow, OK?
OK. Keep me in the loop.
I will.
But I gotta go back to bed now.
Derek could notice if I'm gone too long.
OMG. This is insane. OK.
I'll text you when I wake up.
I'll look after Kate.
I swear.
Alright. OK.
Thanks, Em.
It'll all be OK, somehow.
Yeah. Somehow.
Goodnight, Andrea.
Night.
The next morning.
Andrea? You awake?
Yeah. I couldn't sleep at all.
Any news?
Yeah. I talked to Kate.
I saw her earlier and asked her to help me with something in the bathroom.
The bathroom?
It was an excuse to get her alone.
She didn't seem to recognize me.
What? Why?
I don't know.
She's only met me a few times when she came by our dorm.
I guess she forgot.
Did you remind her you're my roomie this year?
Yeah, but she just kept on talking about The Order.
The Order?
Yeah. She said the cult is called The Order of the Fox Tooth.
I acted like I wanted to join so she'd keep talking about it.
Why the "Fox Tooth?"
I noticed they all wear necklaces with a fox tooth on them.
Why?
I have no clue.
Me and Kate didn't get that far.
The breakfast bell rang and we had to go eat.
Excuse me?
We all had to get up at 6.
They rang some kind of wake up bell.
I got Kate in the bathroom around 6:45 but the breakfast bell rang at 7 and she ran off.
She got scared and said she wasn't supposed to be talking to me.
What? How come?
Something about a vow of silence.
I think she feels bad about breaking it already.
She seems really disoriented.
OMG.
I gotta get her out.
Why do they have bells there?
Derek said it helps to have a daily schedule or routine or whatever.
I think we need to get a move on, though.
It's worse than we thought.
What do you mean?
Kate looks really rough, Andrea.
She's dangerously skinny.
I think she needs to be in a hospital.
WHAT?!
You said they gave her breakfast!
Yeah. They gave out bowls of grain and some juice.
A big disappointment considering dinner was salad and water.
I'm starving.
But Kate told me she hadn't eaten in a week.
A week?! Why?
Something about the cell.
She called it "The Breaking."
She said it's pitch black in the cell and there's no food.
There's some jugs of water and a bucket and that's it.
It's the first step to officially joining.
Hey. I gotta go.
It's time for some kind of ritual silence or something.
They'll notice if I keep making excuses to sneak off and text.
Talk soon.
WAIT!
What about Kate?!
Emily?!
EMILY.
6 hours and 4 minutes later.
Hey. I'm here.
Sorry.
Where the hell have you been?!
I'm beyond worried about Kate.
Derek told me to put away my phone, remember?
I can't text around him anymore.
Or anyone here, actually.
I gotta act like they're sucking me in.
I've been secretly charging my phone behind a dresser.
Otherwise they might figure out what I'm doing and we won't be able to rescue Kate.
Where are you now?
I told them I needed to shower and brought my phone in here with me.
I wrapped it in the towel to keep it secret.
Alright. What's going on?
Did you find out more about Kate?
Kind of.
I passed her a note a few hours ago.
I wrote that I'm seriously considering joining The Order and I wanna know more about The Breaking.
To get ready for it.
I asked for her advice.
I told her I thought it'd be OK to communicate through notes.
OK. Good idea.
Did she write back yet?
Yeah. I got her note a few minutes ago.
She slid it under the bathroom door when I was brushing my teeth.
They have extra toothbrushes for new recruits.
Extra clothes. Soap and stuff.
They take this cult crap seriously.
Emily.
What did Kate's note say?
She wrote a lot.
She said you have to "be of strong moral fiber" to get through The Breaking.
Apparently, you go in the cell willingly.
Three cult members follow you in.
What? Why?
For the first day in the cell, they tell you how terrible you are over and over.
Excuse me?
I guess they insult you, make you feel guilty—basically break you down.
Kate wrote that it feels horrendous.
They keep at it for 24 hours straight.
OMG.
Sometimes cult members rotate out, but there's always three in there with you for the first 24 hours.
Then they leave you totally alone in the dark with no food for the other six days.
And you think about how awful you are.
There's no human contact at all during the last six days.
It's solitary confinement.
See! They DID lock Kate up against her will.
She could have wanted to get out by then.
Actually, no.
That's where the "strong moral fiber" stuff comes in.
Huh?
The padlock on the outside is there so other cult members can't help you.
Like talk to you or sneak you food if they feel sorry for you.
But there's a button in the cell.
Every morning at 6—when the wake up bell rings for the rest of us—the button lights up red for five minutes.
Why?
If you want out, you can push the button.
It doesn't light up the first day because there are three cult members in there berating you.
But the rest of the days, it does.
What happens if you push it?
It signals Derek and he lets you out of the cell.
And you fail The Breaking.
That means you can't join the cult.
That's ridiculous.
Why would anybody put themselves through that?
Why would Kate stay in the cell if she could get out?
The button tests your dedication to The Order.
It's a temptation to get out and escape The Breaking.
It tests your willpower.
But if you stay in the cell until the end of the seventh day, you pass the test.
That's why they let Kate out. She did her time.
Why would anyone want to be in The Order though?
They promise a lot of things.
They seem to think the end times are coming or whatever.
If you're in The Order, you'll be able to survive and keep living in the New World.
They actually believe that apocalypse crap?
They're pretty persuasive about it.
And they deliver the information to you in small doses.
They lure you in, I guess.
Then why is Kate telling you all this stuff?
She's not officially in The Order yet.
She hasn't been trained to recruit.
That could be the reason for the vow of silence.
Because I acted really into it, I guess she believed me.
Like she thinks helping me join will make her look good to Derek.
Is Derek like their leader or whatever?
Seems like it. They call him The Shepherd.
Like he's gonna herd us through the end times or something.
I can't believe I thought he was the perfect boyfriend.
OMG.
My sister is in a creepy cult and my roommate is dating the fucking leader!
What the hell is going on?
It's OK.
Calm down.
Why would Kate fall for this stuff?
I don't know.
You said she's been out of it since your dad died last year.
I guess they sucked her in or thought she was weak or something.
But it kind of seems like they could get to anybody.
They are good at it.
I'm freaked out, Em!
Me too.
But we'll figure this out somehow.
I got a lot of information from Kate's note.
I'll keep getting more and we'll get her out, OK?
But I gotta take the quickest shower known to man and get out of the bathroom before they get suspicious.
OK. Thank you, Em.
Thank you for helping Kate.
It's OK.
But if I'm still here tomorrow, I need you to take notes for me in class.
Of course.
OK. I'll text soon.
Stay safe.
I will, Andrea.
5 hours and 38 minutes later.
Andrea. Something went wrong.
ANDREA.
What?! Where's Kate? Is she OK?
Kate's OK.
It's someone else.
A girl named Celia.
What are you talking about?
Celia had to go through the third rite of initiation tonight.
It's called The Cleansing.
What's that?
I guess after The Breaking, you take a vow of silence 'till The Confession.
That's what Kate has to do next.
Confess all her sins out loud to The Order.
If they accept your confession, you move onto The Cleansing.
How do you know?
Celia told me since I seemed so into it.
She already did her confession.
What happened to Celia, Em?
At The Cleansing, Derek takes you out to the lake in the woods behind the house.
He holds you under the water for a long time.
'Till he feels you are "clean."
It's like a baptism or something.
Emily. Tell me what happened to Celia.
Derek held her under too long.
He told us she began to struggle and that meant she was "unclean."
And?
She drowned, Andrea. Celia drowned.
OMG.
She's dead?!
Yeah.
And Derek killed her.
