A Night to Remember with the Billionaire - Chapter 21

Monday morning starts like any other. The newsroom buzzes with energy as people dive into their tasks, coffee mugs in hand. I’m at my desk, sorting through emails when my editor calls me over. There’s an urgency in his voice that makes my stomach twist slightly.
“Emma,” Mr. Grant says as I approach, “I need you on this. It’s big.”
He hands me a printout of a news alert, and as my eyes skim the headline, my heart sinks. It screams scandal. Alexander’s company is accused of mishandling funds, a financial storm now brewing in the media headlines.
I read the details, shock washing over me. The report suggests major discrepancies in accounts, numbers not adding up—a story that’s a journalist’s dream but my personal nightmare.
“What do you know about this?” Mr. Grant asks, his eyes sharp and assessing. “You’ve got connections with Alexander, right?”
I nod, trying to keep my voice steady. “Yes, but this is the first I’m hearing of it. I’ll look into it.”
He nods, satisfied with my response. “See what you can dig up. This one’s going to be huge.”
Back at my desk, I feel a cold weight settle over me. Alexander. The name stands out in bold on the screen, tangled with words like scandal and fraud. It feels surreal, like watching a slow-motion car crash.
I reach for my phone, sending Alexander a quick text: “I just saw the news. Call me when you can.”
I try to focus on work, but the worry gnaws at me. Minutes tick by like hours, until finally my phone buzzes. Alexander’s name lights up the screen, and I answer quickly.
“Emma,” he says, his voice strained. “You’ve seen it, haven’t you?”
“Yes,” I reply, keeping my voice calm. “What’s going on, Alexander?”
He sighs heavily, and I can imagine him running a hand through his hair. “It’s a mess. I don’t have all the details yet, but we’re conducting an internal audit. I don’t know how this happened.”
“Well, I want to help. Any way I can,” I say, feeling the resolve solidifying within me.
“Thank you,” Alexander replies, the sincerity clear even through the phone line. “Let’s meet tonight. We need to figure out a plan.”
I agree, and we hang up. The rest of the day drags on, the weight of the impending meeting pressing down on me. My coworkers are buzzing with the scandal, and hearing snippets of their conversations makes it feel even more real.
By the time work is done, I’m both eager and anxious to see Alexander, to get some clarity amidst the chaos.
We meet at a quiet restaurant, tucked away from prying eyes and curious ears. He looks tired but determined, a fire in his eyes that tells me he’s ready to fight.
“Emma,” he greets as I sit down. “Thanks for coming. I knew I could count on you.”
“Always,” I reply, a small smile offering comfort. “So, what do we know?”
Alexander explains the situation. Someone flagged discrepancies in the accounts during a routine audit, and now it’s snowballed into a public crisis. The board is in turmoil, and the media frenzy adds more pressure on top of everything else.
“It feels like a setup,” he says, frustration lacing his words. “But I need proof before I can point fingers.”
We talk long into the night, discussing options and strategies. I promise to look into leads from the media side, to see if there’s information he hasn’t uncovered yet.
“I trust you, Emma,” Alexander says as we finish, his voice steady. “We’ll get through this. I need your perspective, your instincts.”
His trust is both a comfort and a pressure. But I know he’s right; my background gives me a unique angle to approach this from.
As we leave the restaurant, I feel a mix of exhaustion and determination. There’s a storm coming, but I know what I have to do.
Back at home, I sit with my notes and computer, ready to dive deep. It’s going to be a long night, but with Alexander by my side, I’m ready to face whatever lies ahead.
I can’t ignore the scale of the challenge, but I am more resolved than ever to uncover the truth—for Alexander, for integrity, and for us. This crisis will test us, but it won’t break us. Not if I have anything to say about it.
