Another You - Episode 1
by Elyse Endick
You could have told me you were coming home.
What? I’m not home.
Well, someone’s in your room.
I’m at school until spring break, Collin.
Whether you like it or not.
It’s probably just my mom.
It’s not your mom.
I saw her leave this morning.
Are you sure?
Positive.
Her car’s not in the driveway.
And you’re sure there’s someone in my room?
I’m looking at them right now.
Show me.
Collin changes the direction of his camera and points it out his window.
Directly across the lawn…
In the window of the house next door…
A person-shaped shadow moves behind pink curtains.
Why are you doing this Collin?
What am I doing?
You’re trying to get my attention…
Maybe even freak me out.
Why would I do that?
Because…
We broke up.
And you can’t accept that.
We were together for 4 years.
That’s not something I can just get over.
You need to try.
When I left for college…
I know you thought we could make long distance work, but…
Both pause.
I guess I was wrong about us.
Maybe in another universe, I would’ve been right.
But I’m not just trying to get your attention.
There’s someone in your room.
And if it’s not you…
And it’s not your parents…
Who could it be?
I don’t know.
But what would someone want in my room?
I took everything valuable with me to campus.
My laptop, my phone…
What about the ring?
What about it?
I told you I would give it back.
I don’t want it back.
It’s yours.
But do you think someone might want to take it?
Crap. You’re right.
I left it in my room.
It’s not worth very much…
It was the smallest stone they had.
That doesn’t matter.
It’s worth a lot to me.
You just said you wanted to give it back.
Because we’re not together anymore.
Not because I don’t care.
Well, where did you leave it?
In my jewelry box.
On my nightstand.
The shadow’s near your bed now.
I’m going over there.
Collin — no.
We should call the police.
Let me check it out first.
Maybe it is just a shadow.
Your room’s never been this empty before.
I’m used to looking over and seeing you there.
Smiling up at me.
Waving goodnight to me before bed.
Flashing your lights to get my attention.
Maybe it’s all just wishful thinking.
I want you to be there…
And you’re not.
Collin…
Besides, I still have my key.
Might as well use it.
Okay, but please be careful.
Let me call you right back.
Collin, wait—
Minutes later…
Ella gets another video call from Collin.
Now he’s outside.
Walking across the pathway between his house and Ella’s.
He carries his phone in one hand…
And a baseball bat in the other.
Collin, what’s that for?
We don’t know who we’re dealing with, El.
A minute ago, you weren’t even sure if this was a person.
You’re really going to fight someone?
I guess I would.
If I had to.
I really think we should call the police.
Let me try and handle this first.
Since when are you all macho?
Since always.
Ella laughs.
Yeah, right.
I don’t know, El.
Our break up made me realize some things.
I lost you.
There’s nothing I can do to change that.
But from now on I want to fight for the things that are important to me.
And your house…
Your room…
That ring…
They mean a lot to me.
Collin, I—
Shh. I’m going in.
Collin uses his key to enter Ella’s house.
Inside it’s dark.
Empty.
But peaceful.
Nothing’s been disturbed.
It doesn’t look like a break-in.
Ella watches as Collin slowly makes his way up the stairs.
He winces as one of the stairs creaks under his weight.
Finally, he reaches the top.
He stops in front of Ella’s door.
A whiteboard reads ‘Ella’s room — Keep Out!”
Ella lowers her voice.
Be careful.
Collin nods.
Turns the doorknob…
And opens the door.
A woman’s scream echoes through the room.
What the—
Collin?
Who’s there?
Collin drops his phone.
Ella can‘t see anything.
She can only hear Collin and the intruder.
Ella?
I don’t understand.
Is this some kind of joke?
What are you talking about?
What are you doing here?
Collin?
Collin, what’s going on?
A woman’s hand reaches down to pick up the phone…
Whoever you are, please, don’t hurt Collin!
The mystery woman shuts off the phone.
Hanging up on Ella.
Back in Ella’s room, Collin sits face to face…
With Ella.
Or, a different version of her.
Another Ella.
Her hair is different.
She’s wearing makeup.
But it’s definitely Ella.
Babe, are you feeling okay?
She puts a hand on Collin’s forehead.
He swats her away.
Collin, what the hell?
I’m freaking out.
I don’t know how you’re doing this.
How are you here?
We were just on the phone.
You’re at school.
How are you doing this?
I’m not doing anything!
I don’t know who you are…
Or what you want.
But this isn’t funny.
Get out of Ella’s house.
Now.
What are you talking about?
Collin crosses over to Ella’s nightstand and pulls out her jewelry box.
There are necklaces, bracelets…
But no ring.
Let me see your hand.
The other Ella is clearly upset now.
Why?
What’s going on?
Just…please.
Ella 2 holds out her hand.
You’re wearing the ring.
Of course I am.
You gave it to me.
I never take it off.
I know it’s just a promise ring, but…
It means so much to me.
Collin is stunned.
Slowly, a realization starts to dawn on him.
Ella…
Did we…ever…break up?
What?!
Why would we break up?!
I’m seriously worried, babe.
Did you hit your head?
Should I call an ambulance?
Collin shakes his head.
His phone starts buzzing in the other Ella’s hand.
It’s Ella. Calling back.
Don’t pick it up.
But it’s too late.
The other Ella has already swiped right, answering the call.
On the line, the original Ella comes into view.
And screams.
Ella 2 goes pale with shock.
She drops the phone.
Collin dives and grabs it, facing Ella on video chat.
Collin, who is that?
What’s going on?
I’m not sure yet.
This has to be fake.
You’re messing with me.
I’m not.
I would never do that.
So you’re telling me there’s someone who looks exactly like me…
Sitting in my bedroom right now?
Some sort of evil twin?
Hey!
Wait.
Collin turns to the phone.
Ella…you broke up with me 3 months ago, right?
…yes…
Collin turns to the other Ella, sitting on the bed.
And, you…
Also Ella.
You said we’re still together?
Yes…what do you mean still?
We’ve always been together.
Ever since middle school.
I even got a job here in town instead of going to college.
Just so I could be with you.
Collin thinks, and turns to face his phone.
I think I know what’s going on.
It sounds crazy, but…
What if this Ella, this house…
Is in a parallel universe.
A universe where we never broke up.
And somehow…
I’m in the middle of the 2 universes.
Collin winces, anticipating Ella’s laughter.
That…actually doesn’t sound crazy.
It…doesn’t?
No.
I’m a physics major, remember?
I study parallel universes.
How they work.
Lots of scientists believe there are universes similar to our own.
Where every choice you make creates a new universe…
A new you.
I know.
Actually, I tried to read some books on it to impress you…
Really?
Yeah, that’s what made me think of it.
But why would your house be in one universe…
And my house in the other?
I don’t know.
But I think you should get out of there.
Collin nods.
Hangs up the phone.
Pockets it.
He then crosses to the other Ella, who is seated on the bed.
Dumbstruck. Crying.
I don’t understand, Collin.
If you want to break up with me, just say it.
Ella, that’s the last thing I want.
If it were up to me…
We’d still be together.
But we are!
Not you and me.
There’s another Collin.
Your Collin.
You guys are still together.
You’ll see him soon, and—
Everything will be back to normal…
For you.
What about your Ella?
Sometimes things don’t work out.
Maybe, someday, we’ll get back together.
But for now…
Ella’s in college on the east coast.
She is?
…I am?
I decided not to go…
But…I wanted it so badly.
Well, my Ella followed her dream.
Your dream.
She’s studying, making new friends.
Dating new people.
And she’s happy.
And what about you?
I’m happy that she’s happy.
It’s hard, but I’ll be okay.
I just need you to do something for me.
I’m going to go back to my house.
I need you to flash your lights.
Why?
If I see them, then I’ll know I’m still in your universe.
And if you don’t see them?
Then I’ll know things are back to the way they were.
Okay.
I’m sorry, Collin.
That things didn’t work out between us.
Yeah…me too.
Ella 2 wraps Collin in a hug.
He lingers in her embrace, wanting the moment to last forever.
Moments later…
Collin calls Ella—
The Ella who’s in college on the east coast.
The Ella who is no longer his girlfriend.
What’s going on?
I’m back in my room.
I told her to flash her lights—
Our signal.
That way, I’ll know if we’re still caught between universes.
This is so insane.
I know.
Wait—
Collin reverses the camera, pointing it out the window—
Towards Ella’s house.
The shadow is still there.
The other Ella pulls back the curtain and waves at Collin.
A light flashes from Ella’s window…
But after a moment it fades, growing dimmer and dimmer…
Until the light is extinguished.
Until the other Ella is just a shadow…
And even that fades away.
Collin reverses the camera back toward himself.
Revealing a face streaked with tears.
On screen, Ella wipes away tears as well.
She’s gone.
No, she’s not.
I’m still here Collin.
And even though we’re not together anymore…
I still love you.
And I’ll always just be a video call away.
Collin nods.
That means a lot to me, Ella.
Ella checks her watch.
I have to get to class now.
Will you be okay?
Of course.
Are you sure?
After all that?
It’s funny…
What is?
It makes me happy.
That there’s a universe where you and I are together.
That somewhere, there’s another Collin, another Ella.
And they managed to make it work.
Yeah.
Me too.
Goodbye, Collin.
Bye Ella.
Moments later…
Ella walks across campus, headed toward class.
Then, her phone rings.
An incoming video call…from Collin.
Confused, she picks it up.
Is everything okay?
Where are you?
I told you, I’m headed to class.
What do you mean?
You just texted me, asking me to come over—
That something crazy had happened.
But I’m at your house, and you’re not there.
And the ring I gave you is here, in your jewelry box.
You told me you’d never take it off.
Is everything okay?
Ella’s eyes grow wide as she realizes that this is not her Collin—
But the Collin from the other universe.
