Blood Red Love - Episode 1
by Grey Kieffer
He’s cheating on me.
I just know it.
I keep telling myself it’s not true.
But deep down in my heart…
I know that something is off.
I’ve been dating Nate for six months.
And he’s my favorite person in the world.
In fact…
He’s the first real boyfriend I’ve ever had.
Last week, we went to the school dance together.
That was the first time I saw the signs.
Usually, he can’t keep his eyes off of me.
But that night, he seemed distant.
And the only person he was staring at…
Was Crystal.
She’s the most popular girl in school.
And lately…
Nate and Crystal have been hanging out. A lot.
This morning at school…
When I find Nate at his locker…
Of course, Crystal is there, too.
Oh, hey Alyssa!
Hi.
I kiss Nate on the cheek.
He gives me a hug.
Crystal and I were just talking about you.
Really?
I look into Crystal’s cold eyes.
She gives me a little smile.
I hate her so much.
Nate says your birthday’s coming up.
He says he’s getting you something really special.
Lucky girl.
She puts a hand on Nate’s shoulder…
And looks me right in the eye.
Wow, this girl gives me the creeps.
Well, see you guys around.
Bye.
Crystal pulls her hoodie up as she walks away.
She’s always wearing that hoodie…
Like she’s too cool to look at you.
I grab Nate’s hand as we walk down the hall.
How are you doing?
I don’t know.
Everything alright?
Yeah…
I just don’t understand…
Why you hang out with Crystal so much.
Look…
We’re just friends, okay?
You have nothing to worry about.
You two would get along.
She’s really pretty interesting…
When you get to know her.
Interesting?
What is that supposed to mean?
Nate, I trust you, okay?
Just don’t give me any reason not to.
Come on, you’re my girlfriend.
I would never do anything to hurt you.
Nate leans in and kisses me.
I’ll see you after school.
At three o’clock the bell rings.
This day has felt like an eternity.
I pull out my phone and text Nate…
But just as I’m about to press send…
I see him across the parking lot.
Of course…
He’s standing with Crystal.
She’s laughing hysterically.
He reaches out and grabs her hand…
My heart sinks into my stomach.
I clench my fists.
Right then and there I decide…
I need to know what’s going on with them.
It might be wrong…
But I have to spy on my boyfriend.
That night…
I park my car down the street from Nate’s house.
I’m hoping he doesn’t leave.
I don’t want to do this.
I want to believe I can trust him.
The hours pass slowly…
And eventually, I drift off to sleep.
But then, all of a sudden…
I hear a slamming noise.
It’s Nate.
He’s closing the front door of his house.
He gets into his car.
It’s almost midnight.
Where could he be going?
I shake myself awake…
And start my car.
I keep my distance, trailing behind Nate’s car.
After a few minutes, he pulls into the cemetery.
A chill runs down my spine.
What could he possibly be doing here?
He parks outside the gate.
I watch from a distance…
As he sneaks through a hole in the fence.
I park on the street, gathering my courage.
Then I follow close behind.
Deep into the cemetery, I see something.
It’s a circle of people…
They greet Nate.
As I get closer, I can make out their faces.
It’s Crystal…
And two other kids from our school:
Tommy and Zack.
I can’t believe it.
There’s something weird going on…
Why are they walking like zombies?
Nate looks completely out of it.
They’re just walking in circles around Crystal…
Over and over again.
It seems like they’re in some sort of trance.
My heart starts to thump in my chest.
Whatever is going on here, it’s not natural.
Crystal closes her eyes.
I hold my breath.
And then…
She snaps her fingers.
Nate grabs Tommy by the arms…
And Zack pins Tommy to the ground.
Violently.
I search Nate’s eyes for any sign of life…
But it’s like he’s completely gone.
Crystal slinks over, her eyes burning blue.
She opens her mouth like a snake…
And then, shining under the moonlight…
She reveals…
Two hideous fangs.
Oh my God.
My mind races.
I don’t understand what’s happening.
Crystal leans down next to Tommy…
And sinks her teeth into his neck.
He doesn’t even flinch…
As she sucks the blood right out of him…
He passes out.
Seeing this happen before my eyes…
I can’t help it.
I scream at the top of my lungs.
Crystal’s head snaps towards me.
Blood trickles down her chin.
After her!
Nate and Zack turn to look at me.
Their eyes are hollow and blue…
Just like Crystal’s.
I take off running…
Past grave after grave.
With every step I take…
They’re on my heels.
I look over my shoulder…
Crystal sprints past the boys.
She’s impossibly fast.
Before I know it…
A strong hand grabs me by the hair.
AHHH!
Crystal throws me to the ground.
Now do you get it?
She smiles at me.
You stupid girl.
I try to scratch at her face…
But she’s too strong.
She pins me to the ground with one hand.
You’re interrupting a sacred practice.
So now you’ll have to join in.
She opens up her mouth…
And bares her fangs…
NATE!
HELP ME!
I’m shaking with fear…
Adrenaline courses through my veins.
PLEASE!
He can’t help you…
He’s not your boyfriend anymore.
He’s MINE now.
She leans down.
I can feel her breath on my neck…
And then…
AGH!
Her body jolts…
Her face contorts.
Sticking out from her back…
Is a sharp wooden stick.
And behind her is Nate.
Crystal lets out the most awful cry I’ve ever heard.
And then, like magic…
She turns to dust.
The only sound is the panting of my breath.
I start to cry.
Nate leans down with tears in his eyes.
He takes me in his arms.
I’m so sorry, Alyssa.
Thank you…
You broke the spell.
You know why?
I look him in the eyes…
Because I heard you calling for me.
And there he is…
My favorite person in the whole world.
I love you so much, Alyssa.
I love you too, Nate.
He takes my face in his hands…
And kisses me like he’s never kissed me before.
And I know that no matter what happens from now on…
I can trust him.
