Boyfriend or Best Friend? - Episode 1
by Grey Kieffer
I’m at the wildest house party of the year.
My boyfriend, Trey, went home an hour ago.
Me and my friend Kat have been dancing all night.
Then all of a sudden…
Out of nowhere…
I look into her eyes…
And we start to make out.
For a second, I completely forget where I am.
I’m lost in the moment…
And then…
I pull away.
Uhh, I’m so sorry.
Kat laughs at me and shrugs her shoulders.
For what?
I slink away from the dance floor…
I have to go.
Oh, c’mon Mad!
Don’t worry about it.
No, I’m sorry…I have to go.
I’ll, uh, see you tomorrow.
My heart starts to pound in my chest.
The whole party seems to blur.
I run out of the house onto the quiet street.
Oh my god.
What have I done?
This is horrible.
I cheated on my boyfriend…
With a girl.
My phone vibrates in my pocket.
The message is from Trey…
I can’t even bear to look at it.
I pocket my phone…
And start to walk home.
I feel so guilty.
This is truly a betrayal of trust.
I can’t run from this mistake.
I have to tell him what I’ve done…
That’s the right thing to do.
The next day at school…
I find Trey at his locker.
Hey, Trey.
He looks at me with those warm eyes…
And gives me a big smile.
Good morning, beautiful.
My stomach is in knots.
Trey, I have to tell you something.
He grabs my hand.
I open my mouth to speak…
But nothing comes out.
What is it, Mads?
I, uh…
I love your shirt.
Hey, thanks!
Me too! You bought it for me!
Oh, hah! Yeah!
Are you sure you’re okay?
Down the hallway I see Kat…
I…yes, I’m great.
I’ll be right back.
Don’t go anywhere!
I scoot past Trey down the hall.
Kat!
She turns and smiles at me.
Hi there!
Last night you were running away from me.
I know, I’m sorry.
I guide her around the corner…
Where Trey can’t see.
Look, Kat…
I’m not really sure what to say.
She grabs me by the shoulders.
Listen, Madison.
We had a moment.
You wanted to make out with me.
And you did, and it was great.
It’s not that big of a deal.
As she’s talking, I get butterflies.
I lose track of everything she’s saying.
And I almost want to kiss her again.
What the heck am I doing?!
Until last night, I'd never kissed a girl before.
And besides, I have a boyfriend.
I’m just confused, okay?
That's totally okay.
If you want to be just friends, great.
But if you want more…
She leans in and gives me a hug.
Just let me know.
I have no idea what to say to that.
And don’t worry…
I won’t tell Trey.
She gives me a wink…
Then disappears down the hall.
All day, my mind is racing…
I have to make sense of this.
And I really have to tell Trey.
After school I go over to his house.
I jump into his arms and hug him tight.
His hair is still wet from the shower he just took.
I love his hair.
Why did I have to kiss Kat?
I’m such an idiot.
Can we talk?
Uh, sure.
I’m nervous…
I can’t help myself.
All of a sudden I just blurt it out…
I kissed my friend Kat!
Trey stares at me for a moment.
Then a smile starts to creep onto his face.
He starts to laugh.
Why are you laughing!
This is serious!
I cheated on you!
Mads, I’ve always known you liked girls.
What?
What do you mean?
It’s fine!
I’m not a girl.
I can’t fulfill that side of you.
And I want you to be happy.
But…I want you.
I take his hands in mine.
You’re my boyfriend.
Yes, and I’m so glad.
But that doesn’t mean…
That you’re not attracted to other people.
I want you to have that space.
Besides, Kat’s cute.
I get it.
You’re so sweet.
I’m going to work this out.
I’ll make sure she knows…
That me and her are just friends.
Whatever you want to do is good with me.
You’re amazing, Trey.
I want you, only.
I lean in and kiss him.
He gives me butterflies, every time.
I’ll see you later.
I race over to Kat’s house…
It’s time to tell Kat that we’re just friends.
I can do this.
I gather up all the courage I have…
And knock on the front door.
The door swings open.
A big smile comes across Kat’s face.
Hey! What’s up, Mads?
Hi! Um…
I look into her eyes.
My palms start to sweat.
I just need to say…
I’ve thought about it and…
We should just be friends.
She looks a little disappointed…
But she smiles anyway.
Because we’ve always been friends.
You’ve always been there for me.
And I don’t want to ruin that.
But I want you to know…
Oh, god, what am I saying?
I think you’re really special.
And I think you’re beautiful.
And before I know it, I grab her hands…
And kiss her…
Kat starts to giggle.
And she kisses me back.
She looks at me slyly.
What exactly were you saying?
About just being friends?
Forget it.
I like you, Kat.
I like you too, Mads.
I was thinking…
I’m going to dinner with Trey…
And some of his friends tonight.
You want to go with us?
Sure, I’d love to.
See ya later.
She kisses my cheek and closes the door.
As I walk onto the street…
I can’t help but feel relieved…
Like a giant weight has been lifted off me.
This love stuff is hard…
And confusing…
But it’s a lot easier…
When you’re honest and free…
To be yourself.
