Darkly - Episode 1
by Kayla Parent
Please don’t do this, Carla.
It’s too dangerous.
Would you relax?
It’s for a good cause!
A good cause?!
A film competition is NOT a good cause!
I can’t believe you’re risking your life for this.
Don’t be so dramatic.
That stuff about Darkly Lane is just a bunch of tales and fables.
People have gone missing on that road!
And strange noises were heard there!
There are stories about a flesh-eating wolf!
LOL, come on, Sue.
You’re smarter than that.
Flesh-eating wolf…do you seriously think that’s a real thing?
Tell me you don’t believe in stuff like that.
Well, what about the picture of it??
You can’t tell me that’s not real.
There are no wolves in Ohio.
It was probably just a large dog.
It wasn’t!
A lot of people have seen it.
Well was it…eating someone?
No. But they say it guards the entrance to the road.
Well, then I hope it’s there tonight.
That would make for some great footage.
Ugh, I’m being serious!
I don’t have a good feeling about this.
I wish you’d think of another topic for your film.
There isn’t a better topic.
No one has gotten footage of Darkly Lane in years.
If I get this…
My film will be a winner for sure.
I put my phone in my purse…
Crank some tunes…
And get ready to drive the 75 miles to Darkly Lane.
My film is going to be epic.
This road is legendary.
Not for the best reasons, I’ll admit.
But I’m not letting that stop me.
I’m not letting anything get in my way.
I’m—
My car starts sputtering.
Ugh.
Outta gas.
I could have sworn I had at least half a tank left.
This is bad.
I’m about a mile from Darkly Lane…
And surrounded by forest on every side.
But then a bright light catches my attention.
Oh, thank the lord.
There’s a gas station.
I pull in on fumes…
Counting my lucky stars.
But as I’m filling up…
Something catches my eye.
Something that seriously ruins my mood.
There’s a cute guy on another pump…
With a Westgate University sweatshirt on.
Same school as me.
But worst of all, he’s got a bunch of camera equipment in his car.
He must feel me staring…
Because he suddenly looks up.
His eyes take me in…
Check out my Westgate bumper sticker…
The boatload of equipment in MY backseat…
And his chest deflates.
Don’t tell me…
Darkly Lane?
For the Young Directors Project?
Not a hard guess.
What else would I be doing out here in the middle of nowhere?
I sigh, annoyed.
Yuuuuup.
He looks just as annoyed as me.
Man, that sucks.
No offense.
I wrench open my gas tank and slam in the gas nozzle.
What am I supposed to do now?
The guy walks over to me.
Name’s Wes.
I’m a sophomore.
I put my hand out.
Carla.
And I’m seriously disappointed.
He laughs…
And then looks thoughtful.
Well, we’re both here.
So we should come to some sort of compromise.
I’m listening.
He crosses his arms.
What’s your film’s angle going to be?
I cross my own arms.
What’s yours?
He laughs again.
Fine, I’ll go first.
I’m trying to do a piece on the child twins who were murdered here.
Apparently they still walk the road on misty nights.
Supposedly you can hear all sorts of things.
Voices calling, crying…
A spooky mix of sounds.
I nod.
I’d like to get footage of the wolf, if possible.
And just some epic scenery shots.
He’s nodding before I finish speaking.
Okay, well…
Then maybe we can help each other out.
If our films are going to be about different things?
Sounds like a good idea to me.
And I wouldn’t hate some company on the road.
Just then a cold wind blows.
It is seriously creepy here.
I quickly finish gassing up and turn to him.
Want to take my car?
Go together?
He looks relieved.
Sounds good.
Just let me get my things.
5 minutes later
As we’re headed toward Darkly Lane, I look over at him.
Have you heard about the wolf out here?
Yeah. Something about him guarding the entrance?
Do you think he accepts student passes?
I laugh loudly at his joke…
He grins, and it makes him even hotter.
You have a great laugh.
Anyone ever told you that before?
I’m taken aback by the compliment.
Feel my cheeks turn a little pink.
My friend Sue makes fun of my laugh.
Says I sound like a baby lamb.
Wes laughs and I steal a glance at him
He looks so attractive in the moonlight.
His pearly white teeth seem to glow in the dark.
Finally, the sign for Darkly Lane comes into view.
We come to a stop.
The street looks dark, but it’s otherwise normal.
Except there’s a strange energy in the air…
Wes gives me a look from the passenger seat.
I think he’s feeling it too.
Creepy, huh?
His voice sounds deeper than before, and gravelly too.
I feel it drag across every nerve ending in my skin.
I flash Wes my best smile.
And toy with the ends of my long, red hair.
My friends tell me it’s my best feature.
Yes. SO creepy.
And that’s what makes it perfect.
We turn onto the road…
And start rolling slowly down it.
Dark, Aspen trees surround us on all sides.
I peer out the window.
No sign of the wolf.
Maybe it’s down a bit further.
We go about half a mile more…
Before Wes yells for me to stop.
Wait!
I think I hear something.
We both freeze.
But I don’t hear a thing.
I swear I heard something.
Maybe we should get out and film here.
Figuring it’s as good a spot as any…
I get out of the car.
The hot air feels stifling.
But a sudden chill runs up my spine.
This place is seriously eerie.
Carla!
The wolf!
My heart leaps in my chest…
And I turn to see what he’s looking at.
But there’s nothing…
Only darkness.
Only Aspen trees.
Something doesn’t feel right.
Hello? Wes?
Where are you?
I don’t see anything. Maybe we should get back in—
Wes’s voice suddenly interrupts me.
The gravelly one, but now it’s rougher still.
Like a low growl.
Trespasser.
Huh?
I instinctively take a step back.
What did you say?
Wes starts turning around…
Slowly.
His eyes flash.
An unnatural yellow.
His teeth elongate, and sharpen.
And the hair on his arms starts to grow.
It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.
I go to run.
But I’m stuck in place.
I go to scream.
But I have no voice.
Noises suddenly explode around me.
Whimpering.
Screaming.
Crying.
And the last thing I see is…
The wolf.
2 days later
The Ohio Times.
Front Page.
Darkly Lane Killer Strikes Again.
Two evenings ago…
Westgate University student Carla Row disappeared on or around Darkly Lane.
Both she and her car are missing.
Search parties are combing the area…
But so far, they have come up empty.
Darkly Lane has had many disappearances in the past.
Some even tell stories involving wolves.
Reports of strange noises add to its spooky lure.
One such noise was reported the night of the disappearance.
It was described as a unique laugh.
Similar to the mewling of a baby lamb.
