The deep blue ocean surrounds me on all sides.
My scuba gear weighs heavy on my back.
I check my oxygen levels…
There’s a quarter of a tank left.
What WAS that down there?
Even in the darkness, it glistened.
I swim these waters every day…
But I’ve never seen anything like it.
I dive down and kick my flippers.
A quarter of a tank is enough.
I can make it.
The sunlight disappears as I swim further.
My headlamp illuminates a school of sunfish.
Their silver scales gleam as they scatter.
I’m almost there…
I know these waters like the back of my hand.
My mom hates it when I stay out too long.
She says it’s dangerous.
But I know where I’m meant to be:
Beneath the ocean.
There it is!
It’s half sunken in the sand:
A brilliant blue sapphire.
It’s bigger than my fist.
And the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
It must be worth MILLIONS.
But what is it doing here?
This could pay for my college tuition…
And then some.
I carefully dig it out of the sand.
It’s heavier than I thought.
I cradle it to my chest.
I’m taking a huge risk:
My oxygen is almost out.
I kick hard off the bottom.
Slowly but surely, I rise to the top.
One last kick…
Sunlight blinds me as I surface.
I gasp for air, pulling out my snorkel.
Wow.
The sapphire catches the sun at a thousand angles.
It’s so beautiful.
And so heavy.
I swim over to my tiny boat.
Maybe now I can afford a new one.
I place the sapphire on the stern.
I hoist myself out of the water.
Just then, I hear a voice call to me.
Voice
Voice
Hi there!
I jolt with fear.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Ah!
Drifting towards me is an elegant speedboat.
A handsome boy stands on the bow.
His blonde hair blows in the breeze…
Kelsey
Kelsey
Hi! Sorry, you scared me.
The boy smiles at me warmly.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Didn’t see you there.
Boy
Boy
I saw you anchored over here.
Boy
Boy
I figured I’d come say hi.
Boy
Boy
Great spot for diving, huh?
He stretches his arms into the sky.
Wow…he’s actually kind of cute.
Boy
Boy
What do you have there?
He nods at the sapphire.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Oh, nothing.
Boy
Boy
Doesn’t look like nothing.
I change the subject.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Nice boat!
Boy
Boy
You should see the other one!
He points to the horizon.
There, floating like an island…
Is the biggest yacht I’ve ever seen.
It must be 500 feet long.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Please don’t tell me that’s yours.
Boy
Boy
Well…technically it’s my dad’s.
Boy
Boy
But it’s mine for the weekend.
Boy
Boy
Are you hungry?
Boy
Boy
The chefs are serving lobster.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Uh, I should really be getting back.
Boy
Boy
Do you come out here often?
Kelsey
Kelsey
Yeah. It’s my happy place.
Kelsey
Kelsey
I’m a marine biology student.
Boy
Boy
You’re kidding.
Kelsey
Kelsey
No, why?
Boy
Boy
I’m studying marine biology, too!
Kelsey
Kelsey
What? No way!
Boy
Boy
Come have lunch with me. Please.
Boy
Boy
We have so much to talk about.
He gives me that warm smile again.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Well, I do love lobster…
He glides the speedboat over.
I quickly grab the sapphire…
And tuck it into my backpack.
He doesn’t seem to notice.
Boy
Boy
I’m Damien, by the way.
Kelsey
Kelsey
I’m Kelsey.
I take his hand.
Damien
Damien
Nice to meet you, Kelsey.
He helps me into the speedboat.
He pushes the throttle.
We start flying across the ocean.
Wow. This thing is fast.
Maybe a little too fast.
Kelsey
Kelsey
So, what does your dad do?
Damien
Damien
Ah, well, it’s complicated.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Oh, okay.
I crane my neck up at the yacht.
The closer we get, the bigger it is.
Kelsey
Kelsey
This is insane.
Damien
Damien
You haven’t seen anything yet.
We pull up to the stern.
I see 5 crew members in matching outfits.
They tie up the boat and help us aboard.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Hi everyone!
I get no response from the crew.
In fact, they don’t even look at me.
Damien
Damien
Set the dining table on the top deck.
A crew member pulls out a radio…
He sends out the order.
Damien
Damien
And take her backpack for her.
Kelsey
Kelsey
Oh no, I’ll hold onto it.
Damien
Damien
Okay, sure.
Damien
Damien
This way.
We step into an elevator.
He pushes the button for the top deck.
Kelsey
Kelsey
I’ve never seen an elevator…
Kelsey
Kelsey
On a yacht.
Damien
Damien
And I’ve never seen a sapphire…
Damien
Damien
Like that before.
My stomach drops.
The elevator doors close.
Damien
Damien
I’m going to make this simple…
Damien
Damien
Either you give me the sapphire…
Damien
Damien
Or I’m going to sail to open ocean…
Damien
Damien
And throw you overboard.
I scream at the top of lungs.
Damien
Damien
Don’t bother.
The elevator doors open up…
Damien
Damien
No one can hear you up here.
Damien
Damien
And even if they could…
Damien
Damien
They work for me.
I shake with fear.
Kelsey
Kelsey
You’re a psychopath.
Damien
Damien
Hardly.
Lunch is laid out on the table…
A full spread.
Damien
Damien
So what’s it going to be?
Damien
Damien
Do you want a nice lunch?
Damien
Damien
Or…
Damien
Damien
Do you want things to get complicated?
I stare into his eyes.
They aren’t warm anymore…
They’re ice cold.
Kelsey
Kelsey
You’re pathetic.
Kelsey
Kelsey
What do you need the money for?
Damien
Damien
That’s not really the point.
Damien
Damien
I like shiny things.
Damien
Damien
And keeping them away from…
Damien
Damien
Stupid girls like you.
I take off, sprinting across the deck…
I reach the edge.
Damien calmly walks out behind me.
Damien
Damien
That’s pretty risky…
Damien
Damien
It’s a 4-story drop.
I look over the edge…
My heart beats in my chest.
It’s a long way down…
Kelsey
Kelsey
Well, I like taking risks…
Kelsey
Kelsey
And anything is better…
Kelsey
Kelsey
Than lunch with you.
I don’t think.
I just jump.
The air rushes by…
I hit the water hard.
My backpack flies off…
I reach for it desperately.
But it’s too heavy…
It sinks like a stone.
Damien looks down from high above…
Watching me go.
I swim for my life…
My boat is in the distance.
I know these waters like the back of my hand.
If I have to come back here every day…
I’ll find that sapphire again.
Somewhere at the bottom…
Of the deep ocean.
