Discovery
by James Kenney
Discovery, confirm contact.
This is Discovery, confirming contact.
What is your position, Discovery?
I am now 9,000 miles from the surface of Pluto.
Excellent. Inform us immediately if you see anything unusual.
Roger that.
By the way, is my wife on the line?
I’m here, hon.
Hey babe.
How does it look up there?
Stark and lonely. But it's beautiful.
Wish you were here.
Loss of contact begins in t-minus 60 seconds.
Roger that.
When will I hear from you again, Martin?
I'll be back in contact in 22 hours.
I'll have man's first photos and measurements of Pluto by then :)
I’m proud of you, Martin. I love you.
Martin?
Contact with Discovery has been lost.
We will regain contact in t-minus 22 hours.
But I didn't get to say goodbye!
Don't worry, Daniella.
Discovery should be entering the shadow of Charon, Pluto’s largest moon, right now.
In the evening, when Daniella is back home, her laptop lights up.
She hears Martin’s voice.
It's incredible.
Martin???? Is that you? OMG.
But how?!
Pluto is bright with ice.
There is a dark expanse around its equator.
It's only been 11 hours. How are you contacting me??
I can confirm that Pluto has no fifth moon.
Are you in contact with NASA?
Martin, are you OK?
I’m looking at the photo I brought.
Of Christopher squeezing his little red ball.
He never let it go.
Do you remember?
He slept with it.
Yes, I remember.
He loved that ball.
And Martin, he loved you very much.
Until the day he died.
The disease took him from us too soon.
Daniella, something is happening here.
What do you mean? Is everything okay?
There is something here. It is reaching for me.
I love you, Daniella.
I love you too, Martin.
What is happening, Martin?
Martin?!
30 seconds later
Daniella, are you there?
I’m here.
We are sorry to tell you that we’ve lost all traces of Discovery.
But Martin was just in contact with me less than a minute ago!
We have no evidence of recent contact.
I just heard his voice over the radio!
Ask him to send us his vital signs.
Daniella messages Discovery.
Martin, are you there? Answer me.
I wish you were here.
Honey, you need to send your vital signs to the NASA doctors.
It’s so beautiful here.
Confused, Daniella messages NASA.
Can you hear what he’s saying?
Negative. What is it?
Tell him to send his pulse.
Daniella quickly messages Martin.
Please send them your vital signs now!
You’re not on their systems, baby.
Do you see? Do you see?
What is happening?
I’m going to be with him now.
With who, Martin? You’re up there alone.
We Are Taking Him Now.
He Will Be Ours.
They Will Both Be Ours.
That doesn’t sound like you, Martin!
A message appears on Daniella’s laptop.
Are you currently in contact with Martin, Daniella?
Yes!
But he doesn’t sound like himself at all.
We have no oxygen readings, Daniella.
All life-sustaining systems have shut down.
Oh god no. How long does he have?
We have critical shutdown on all systems.
Baby, can you hear me?
We are aborting the mission.
And commencing return procedures.
I’m so sorry, Daniella.
Martin is no longer alive.
In her despair, Daniella messages her husband.
Martin???
Martin, please answer me.
I can’t lose you too.
Please!
I love you so much.
She begins sobbing uncontrollably.
Two weeks later, Daniella receives a text from NASA.
We have confirmation from the radio dish in California that Discovery is on a trajectory for the Baltic Sea.
We have teams situated there.
We will notify you when we have opened the spacecraft.
You will be able to view the remains in private.
One minute later, Daniella’s laptop lights up.
Daniella?
Martin?
The Contract Is Sealed.
He Too Is Ours.
Martin, what is going on?
Are you alive?!
They are about to take me.
They said you were dead!!
This isn’t possible!!
I have someone here who wants to talk to you.
They took him too.
What? Who?
Christopher, say hello to your mother.
This isn’t funny.
Who is this?
Hello mommy. Daddy found me.
I was so sick in the hospital.
It hurt so much.
But now I’m here.
And now Daddy is here too.
There’s no more pain.
It’s so beautiful.
We’re playing and laughing.
What??!! How?
Christopher? Could that really be you?
We are sending something down to you as a sign.
We are up here now.
They Are Ours.
What are you sending me?
Please talk to me!
There is silence.
5 minutes later
Daniella, we can see Discovery on radar.
The Hubbell Telescope confirms visual that Discovery is re-entering our atmosphere.
Daniella, Discovery has landed intact.
Teams are stationed around the craft.
10 minutes later
Daniella?
Yes?
We have breached the seal and are inside Discovery.
This is baffling. No one is here.
There is no trace of Martin or his remains.
How can that be?
There is no evidence that Martin was ever here.
We did find a red ball.
You mean a photo of our son holding a red ball?
No — not a photo. An actual red ball.
But Martin didn’t take a red ball with him into space.
He must have.
We haven’t seen that ball since our child was buried with it.
That must have been the sign.
The sign?
They said they would send a sign.
It’s a sign that my husband and son are out there.
And that other life is out there too.
2 days later
Request has been granted to send a probe to investigate astronaut Martin Hale’s mysterious disappearance.
And to commence a search for alien life.
