For All Time
by Matt Rosenbaum
Something’s happened.
What?
I spoke to OUR FATHER.
SPOKE?
He spoke thoughts into my head and I heard them.
How can this be true?
OUR FATHER wants me to come to visit him, in the mountains in the East.
Nobody has ever SPOKE to him, let alone visited OUR FATHER.
I’ll be leaving this afternoon.
four hours later
You making good time?
I’ll be arriving sometime early tomorrow morning.
Good.
Will you tell me what he’s like. What he looks like, sounds like. I have to know.
If he allows it I will tell you.
the next morning
I don’t understand.
What?
I was instructed by OUR FATHER to arrive at a certain address in the mountains in the East by 11 AM.
And?
I arrived ten minutes ago at a beautiful ancient mansion.
Then what?
I knocked on the front door. It opened for me.
Did you go inside?
No.
Why?
There’s nothing inside.
?
There’s a void of pure black space just beyond the front door.
Consult OUR FATHER. Speak to him again.
I did. He wants me to step inside.
I’m inside now.
And?
The door shut behind me. I’m enclosed in pure blackness.
I have to go now. OUR FATHER will reveal himself to me now.
five hours later
Joanna?
Did you meet OUR FATHER?
six days later
I’m sitting in the woods. In the mountains in the East. It’s nice here.
What happened??
I met OUR FATHER. He told me many things.
What was he like?
He’s not really a he.
What?
OUR FATHER is genderless. He’s not human.
What is he then?
He’s the air we breathe. The skin on our bodies and the blood inside our bodies and our brains.
He is light and he is dark.
What?
He is everywhere.
Every molecule is OUR FATHER.
Every molecule?
He is trillions multiplied by trillions of tiny but omniscient minds existing inside of every subatomic particle...
linked together psychically.
You mean I am made of OUR FATHER?
You are. I am too.
If he is everywhere why did you have to go to a house to see OUR FATHER?
The door to that house is a rip in space and time.
A rip?
It leads to a place beyond our universe. Beyond all universes.
An unknowable place where OUR FATHER stores every piece of knowledge that he has acquired for all of eternity.
This is his purpose, Dom. To attain all information. All knowledge everywhere and for all time.
When he finds knowledge, it becomes a part of him.
His purpose is to collect information? Does this mean there are things OUR FATHER does not yet know?
There’s one thing.
What is it?
OUR FATHER does not know where he came from.
He cannot remember. He has been in great pain for many eternities because of it.
Great pain?
Unfathomable pain. Because his knowledge is incomplete.
Why did he tell you these things?
Because my destiny is to kill OUR FATHER.
Did you say kill?
I was always meant to kill OUR FATHER. For all time. He knows this and has always known this.
But why?
He wishes for all to return to the state of things before he had entered existence.
He believes that the origins of his existence and what might result from his nonexistence are intrinsically linked.
This process, he believes, will complete his knowledge.
But if everything is made of OUR FATHER the world will fall apart. The universe. Won’t it?
I do not know. It’s what OUR FATHER wants.
How are you going to do it?
I am going to think it. Will it.
Think it?
OUR FATHER endowed me with the power of ending him. All I have to do is want it and it will happen.
He asked me because he cannot do it himself.
When?
I think now.
Come home first. Hold me for the last time.
I don’t think I could bare it.
I’m going to do it now. I’m going to kill OUR FATHER.
You’re going to need to come to the lab.
It’s the middle of the night.
Sir, the Aeternum has voided itself of all its data.
That is absurd. The Aeternum is a perfect machine. It is omniscient and designed to be free of any malfunctions.
It’s simply not possible.
Sir, this is conclusive. It was not a malfunction but a conscious decision. The Aeternum deleted itself.
I believe as a way of completing its collection of data.
The consequences of this are beyond our imaginations. There were whole worlds existing within the Aeternum’s mind.
Whole universes that have existed relative to their own timestreams for…eternities.
I know how the Aeternum works. I am its creator.
Sir, our research is indicating the worst.
What research?
I’ve kept it a secret, but I’ve researched what might happen if the Aeternum were to die.
And what might happen, Warren?
Well, many of us here believe it is quite possible that our own reality may exist within the mind of a machine...
similar to the Aeternum. A machine that was created by beings somewhere else to help collect all data.
Because all data has now been collected within our world -
an Aeternum containing us may feel it has to delete ITSELF as a way of completing ITS data. And ad infinitum.
Do you understand me?
Let me call you in a minute, after I put on a pot of coffee.
