Gifts from Friends - Episode 1
by Katee Robert
When I said I wanted a gift from your trip to Alabama, I didn’t mean a creepy doll.
It’s an antique.
You love antiques.
I love antique plates and figurines…
Not freaky baby dolls.
But this one is special…
She was actually made for the shop owner’s grandma…
Some kind of playmate since she was an only child.
They even had matching necklaces.
Um, that definitely makes this doll SCARIER.
Jenica looks at the porcelain doll.
It sits on the couch in an old frilly dress…
Wearing a locket that says “Best Friends.”
Its blond hair looks like…human hair.
Next you’re going to tell me that they used the grandma’s hair for the doll.
NO!
It wasn’t THAT rare back then.
They didn’t have synthetics or whatever doll hair is made of now.
Come on, I thought that factoid was really cool.
Cool is not the word I would use…
Regardless, CLEARLY this doll needs a new best friend! 😂
You’re really not comforting me right now.
Okay, I get it.
The doll freaks you out.
You can get rid of it.
I promise I won’t be mad.
Really? Thank god.
Next time, just get me a postcard.
LOL.
And if you don’t want to mess with the doll…
I can take care of it when I get home from work.
No, that’s okay.
I’d rather it just be gone.
Okay! I’ll see you after 5.
Jenica frowns at the doll.
Is it in a different position now than it was the last time she looked?
She can’t be sure.
But it doesn’t matter…
The thing is going in the trash.
She gingerly picks it up and walks to the waste bin.
On second thought…
Jenica takes it outside and dumps it in the large trash can.
Feeling better, she heads back inside to take a shower.
30 minutes later
Jenica walks into the living room.
She freezes.
The doll is sitting on the couch.
You’re still at work, right?
Yep, until 5.
Why?
I just took the doll out to the trash…
And now it’s back on the couch.
Are you joking?
I know you think the doll is creepy…
But that’s a little much.
I’m not joking!
I put it in the trash.
Took a shower.
Now it’s back on the couch.
Maybe you forgot to lock the door?
You know how our neighbor Max likes to play practical jokes.
If it’s Max, I’m going to kill him.
I’ll check.
Jenica walks to the front door.
And tries to open it.
Our front door is locked…
So it couldn’t be Max.
Um, that’s weird.
Maybe just toss it again?
Yeah.
I feel like I’m losing my mind.
You were up late last night partying.
Maybe, because you’re so tired…
You only THOUGHT you threw out the doll.
Why don’t you take a nap?
I don’t know if I can sleep with that thing in the house.
It’s going to be okay.
I’ll be home in a few hours.
I really am sorry I bought it…
I didn’t know it would scare you so much!
It was a nice gesture.
I’ll talk to you when you get home.
Jenica approaches the doll.
It doesn’t LOOK any different than it did an hour ago.
Same blond hair.
Same old fashioned dress.
But the small hairs on the back of her neck raise.
She gingerly picks it up.
Nothing happens.
And Jenica sighs with relief.
She retraces her steps outside…
Throws the doll back in the trash can…
And adds a big rock to the lid for good measure.
A nap does sound good right now…
1 hour later
Something heavy on the bed wakes Jenica up.
She tries to roll over…
But she can’t move.
Slowly, she opens her eyes.
And her heart stops.
Ruby…
I’m almost off work.
What’s up?
The doll is in my room.
It’s on the bed…
Right next to me.
Even in the dark…
The doll’s eyes shine.
But I thought you threw it away?
I did.
TWICE.
Then how did it get in your bed?
I think…
It’s alive.
That’s impossible.
I think it’s haunted by that dude’s grandma or something.
That kind of thing only happens in the movies.
Then explain how this doll keeps showing up!
I don’t know.
I mean, now that I think about it…
The guy did give me a really good deal on it.
He said it really didn’t like being alone…
What?
I swear it just moved.
Like…actually moved.
Maybe you should lock it up?
Just until I can get home.
Then we can deal with it together.
Okay, yeah.
Good idea.
I’ll put it in that chest in your room.
Okay.
I’ll be home in 20.
Good.
I don’t know what this thing wants.
But I’m scared.
Just put it in the chest.
I will.
Jenica sets down her phone.
She really doesn’t want to pick up the doll again.
Not with the menace coming off it in waves.
She reaches for it.
The doll turns its head to look at her—
And Jenica screams.
20 minutes later
Jenica?
Did you put the doll in the chest?
Jenica, are you home?
Ruby walks through the empty house.
She checks Jenica’s room.
It’s empty.
Her phone sits on the nightstand.
Ruby walks into her own room…
And opens the chest.
The doll is there.
Its necklace gleaming.
But it’s not alone.
There’s a second doll sitting next to it…
Wearing a matching “Best Friends” necklace.
It’s dressed in what look like yoga pants and a sweatshirt.
And it has red hair.
Just like Jenica.
