Life of the Party - Episode 3
by Ava Conway
Nate, put the gun down. Please.
Nate aims his long shotgun at Lynn.
Nate, what the hell’s going on?
Nate tightens his finger on the trigger.
Shit.
Lynn turns and runs, zigzagging at random.
Several rounds of gunfire go off all around her.
Where can I go?
Think, Lynn. Think!
Lynn bursts through the thick trees and into a small clearing.
She hears fast and heavy footsteps on the ground behind her.
Panicking, Lynn runs toward an old, abandoned shed to hide.
She collapses in a dark corner and starts to shake in fear.
After several attempts, she pulls out her phone and begins to type.
Nate, why are you doing this?
We were going to move in together.
You said you loved me.
How could you do this? Was everything between us a lie?
Nate? Talk to me, damn it!
Nate sets his gun aside and frowns at his phone.
After a long moment, he runs his hand over his face in frustration.
You there?
Yeah. The party’s together and we’ve got her surrounded in here…
She can’t hide forever. When she comes out, we’ll get her.
We need to call this off.
What????
This isn’t working.
What on earth are you talking about?
It’s working perfectly.
Normally we target horrible people to be the prey.
People who are rotten to the core.
That way, society won’t care if they suddenly go missing.
Lynn isn’t one of those people. She’s nice.
She has friends. And there’s her brother, Drake—
Shut up.
Just…shut up with all of your excuses.
YOU were the one who picked her as a target, not me.
She wasn’t a target, not initially.
We met at a party and hit it off, remember?
You took one look at her and said that she would be the perfect prey.
If I remember correctly, you agreed with me.
You said that we never hunted someone from the cross-country team before.
It would be a new challenge. We could charge double.
Yes, that’s true. But I got to know Lynn better…
If you were having second thoughts, you should have said something before we got in too deep.
Are you shitting me right now? I said something, remember?
You told me that I was getting soft.
Dude, we can’t call it off now. The hunt has already begun.
We’d have to pay everyone back and we already spent the money.
I told you not to get that new pickup truck until after the hunt was over.
Forget the pickup. The target knows too much.
If we let her go, she’ll run straight to the police.
Tell them everything.
What if she promises not to go to the police?
No. End of discussion. We need to see this thing to completion, Nate.
Now shut up and get over here.
Sighing, Nate picks up his gun and moves to join the others around the shed.
As he moves into position, he whispers urgently to Brad.
I don’t think I can do this anymore.
Oh my God, Nate. Grow a pair already, will ya?
If you really want out, then you can get out after this hunt is over.
Right now, we need to shoot this prey before the sun comes up…
And people start asking what we are all doing out here in the woods…
Nate sighs again and checks his text messages.
Fine, don’t talk to me, Nate. I don’t need you. I don’t need anyone.
I’ve already texted Drake and he’s calling the police.
Within minutes, this place is going to be swarming with cops.
They’ll never make it in time, Lynn.
What do you mean?
You’ll be long dead by the time help arrives.
You have to find me first.
Not a problem.
Twigs crack on the ground outside the shed.
Panicking, Lynn stuffs the phone into her pocket and peeks out the window.
Several hunters step into the clearing. They quickly surround the shed.
Swallowing her fear, Lynn tucks her body down and rolls out of the shed doors.
Once outside, she pops up and sprints towards the woods, bobbing and dodging the gunfire thundering all around her.
Just as she makes it to the tree line, something hits her leg.
She tumbles into nearby bushes as pain blossoms in her outer thigh.
Come on guys. This way!
