Life of the Party - Episode 4
by Ava Conway
Damn it!
Lynn glances down at her thigh to see blood spreading through her jeans.
I got her!
Come on team. She couldn’t have gone far.
Gritting her teeth, Lynn drags herself over to the edge of a ravine.
She rolls down the incline until she hits the bottom.
Fresh pain blasts through her.
Fighting to maintain consciousness, Lynn shifts her body under a small rock ledge.
Do you see her?
No, do you?
I think she went this way.
Leaves and twigs crackle as footsteps fade into the distance.
Lynn lets out a long, uneasy breath as her phone vibrates.
Where are you?
If you think I'm going to tell you where I am, asshole...
Aw, come on, that's no way to treat someone you called the life of the party a few hours ago.
Lynn frowns at the screen.
Brad? Is that you?
Yeah, I'm using Nate's phone.
Where's Nate?
He's indisposed. Got a little too emotional, so I’m taking charge.
Now be a good girl. Tell me where you are.
Go to hell.
We will find you eventually, you know.
If you tell us where you are, we'll make your death quick.
Or you can sit and wait while you bleed out.
Go away.
I know we hit you already. You probably can't even walk.
Come on. Let us put an end to your suffering.
Lynn examines her leg.
Thank God! The bullet only grazed her skin.
Screw you. Leave me alone.
Can't do that, honey.
Lynn hears footsteps on the forest floor.
She jerks her gaze up from her phone. She’s too exposed.
Gritting her teeth, she puts the phone away and tears off a piece of her sleeve.
She makes a sloppy tourniquet on her leg and pulls herself into a standing position.
Grimacing in pain, she searches for another hiding spot.
After an hour, she receives a text from Drake...
I'm here. Where are you??
Hiding by this creepy looking tree.
What the hell took you so long?
I ran into some red tape with the local cops.
Where are you?
At the cabin by the lake with law enforcement.
They’re fanning out around the lake, looking for you.
I'm nowhere near the cabin.
Are you by the lake? If you could get yourself there, we might be able to see you.
Yeah, you and those assholes with the guns. I’d be a sitting duck.
They shot me, Drake.
What??!?
They shot me!
Where? How bad is it?
In the leg. It just grazed the surface, but it hurts like hell.
I'm bleeding all over the place.
Shit. Where are you? I'm coming to get you.
Don't be stupid. You can't get to me without those assholes finding you.
You'll get shot.
It's a risk I'm willing to take.
No! Stop the macho crap, Drake. I can’t lose you. Not after…
Lynn, if you stay where you are, you'll get killed.
You have to keep moving.
I can't! Didn't you listen to me? They shot me in the leg!
When I stand, I feel like I’m going to pass out. I literally see spots.
You have to try.
If you can get yourself to the edge of the lake, then we can spot you and get to you.
What about those people shooting at me?
Don’t worry about them. There are people tracking them down.
You need to get to safety. That’s the top priority.
In fact, that should be your ONLY priority.
What can I do? They’re all around me.
Hold on. Getting instructions.
Okay. There's a fallen tree on the other side of the lake.
Looks like it was hit by lightning or something.
Get to that tree. We’ll be waiting there to keep you safe.
Okay.
Lynn tries to stand again, but she collapses.
I don't think I can, Drake.
I used up the last of my energy getting to this hiding spot. You'll have to come to me.
No! You can do this, Lynn.
You're strong. And you’re fast.
Remember that time when you outran me and the rest of the guys?
People still talk about it, you know. You broke records.
Yeah, but I had two good legs back then.
You were always the best at everything. Top of the class.
A lot of good that does me now.
It does. Because you need strength of mind to get through a situation like this, and you have it.
So come on – mind over matter.
Haha, easy for you to say.
I’ll take your laughter as a good sign.
You can do this. Just get yourself to that tree and everything will be over.
Lynn jerks back in surprise as she hears a gunshot ring through the air.
Did you hear that? It sounded close. Too close.
I think they found me, Drake.
Then you have to run, Lynn. It's your only chance.
Run Lynn. Do you hear me? RUN!
