Life of the Party - Episode 5
by Ava Conway
Where are you now??
Okay, I’m about three feet from the tree now. I can hear them behind me.
We’re close as well. Making our way around the lake.
Lynn reaches the edge of the woods as gunfire and footsteps echo around her.
Grabbing the edge of a fallen tree, she pulls herself up onto the trunk and waves her hands.
I think I can see you.
Hang on, we’re coming.
Hurry, Drake. They’re right behind me.
Lynn looks up from her phone to see Brad and Nate emerge from the woods.
They aim their guns at her.
There you are.
Lynn turns her head from side to side, considering each of the boys.
Nate, please. You don’t want to do this.
We’ve got you now, bitch.
No, Brad. Wait.
Brad flashes Nate an irritated look.
Seriously? You’re telling me to wait?
Yes, because she’s right. We don’t want to shoot her.
Not yet.
What are you talking about?
If we shoot her now, then what happens with the rest of the party?
What do you mean?
We all have our celebration. Then you and I spend what’s left of that cash.
No.
If they were too excited about the hunt to follow the safety rules…
How do you think they’ll react when they’re robbed of the huge payoff?
Lynn notices that the men aren’t paying attention to her.
Slowly, she slides down the side of the tree trunk.
They might want their money back because they didn’t get their kill.
Good point. But if that’s the case – where are they?
I don’t know. They were supposed to be following us.
Idiots. Probably ran off again.
They have no idea—
Brad turns back to Lynn.
Hey! Where the hell do you think you’re going?
Lynn freezes.
Nowhere.
Footsteps echo from the woods off to their left.
Finally.
They’re here.
Better late than never.
Both Brad and Nate tighten their holds on their guns.
No, wait!
There’s still time to stop this.
I’m sorry, bae. You know too much.
Brad glances around at woods.
I think I hear our hunting party now.
Come on out, guys. We have her surrounded!
Dozens of FBI agents burst out from the trees.
Brad is close to the edge of the clearing. In three quick maneuvers, a nearby agent subdues him.
Stunned, Nate drops his gun and rushes toward Lynn.
Before she can react, he pulls her toward his chest.
Twisting her arm, he turns her body so she is between him and the FBI.
You’ll never take me alive!
Nate takes out a large hunting knife and places it against Lynn’s neck.
Drake emerges from the group, wearing an FBI jacket.
He draws his gun.
Let her go, Nate.
What the hell? Why are you wearing an FBI jacket?
Because he’s an agent, Nate. They’re all agents.
We’ve been duped, man.
Nate tightens the knife at Lynn’s throat.
If you take one more step, I’ll kill her.
You hear me? I’ll kill your sister, damn it!
I’m not his goddamned sister.
Nate loosens his grip and stares at Lynn.
What?
Lynn spins out of Nate’s hold. Grabbing his arm firmly, she launches his body backward, into the air…
And slams him, face-first, into the dirt.
Putting her knee in the center of his back, she wrestles the knife from his limp grasp.
Somebody give me some cuffs!
Drake tosses her his handcuffs.
Lynn cuffs Nate and drags him to his feet.
Nice job, Agent Carlyle.
Why thank you, Agent Garrison.
What the hell? You’re BOTH Feds?
I’m afraid so.
Lynn hands Nate to two FBI agents.
I don’t understand.
He turns to look at Lynn over his shoulder.
You told me he was your brother!
Yeah, and you told me I was going to your 21st birthday.
But you had actually arranged for my murder.
Call it even?
As Nate is dragged away, Drake approaches Lynn.
He reaches his hand out toward her, but then rubs the back of his neck.
I can’t believe we finally got those guys – and after two years.
We owe this entire op to you, you know.
Yeah, well…
No seriously. You’re the one who volunteered to go undercover...
Even though I thought it was too dangerous.
You always think my missions are too dangerous.
They are. You take too many risks.
Risks are part of the job. You know that.
I don’t like how you keep tempting fate.
Lynn flashes him a coy grin and nudges his arm.
Better watch that protective streak, big guy. Someone might think you care.
I do care, Lynn. I care a lot.
Lynn’s smile falters as the air electrifies between them.
For a long, heated moment they stand there, staring at each other.
Then Lynn averts her gaze and takes a step away from his touch.
Drake…don’t.
Drake takes a step toward her and stops when she shows him her back.
Why won’t you give us a chance, Lynn?
You know why.
Drake flexes his fingers in frustration.
I can change.
You can’t change who you are, Drake.
And I can’t be the woman you want me to be.
I’m not asking you to change.
No, you’re asking me to quit.
Not quit—be safe.
Yeah, be safe behind a desk.
I can’t take a desk job, Drake. It would kill me.
Staying in the field will kill you.
This time you got grazed. Next time…
I’m not like her, you know. I’m not going to die like Diana.
Drake steels his jaw as several strong emotions pass through his features.
Lynn shakes her head and walks back towards the woods.
Defeated, Drake stuffs his hands into his pockets.
He slowly follows Lynn back to the cars in silence.
