Married At First Sight - Chapter 21
by Nalini Sharma
The winds of autumn breeze through the city, whispering change around every corner. Sophie and I are standing on the balcony, coffee mugs warming our hands as we take in the view. Everything seems calm and perfect, yet I know life can flip in an instant.
"Do you feel it too?" Sophie asks, her eyes scanning the horizon, mirroring my thoughts.
"Yeah," I nod. "Things've been too quiet."
Our peaceful moment is interrupted by a phone buzz. It's a notification from one of the news apps I generally avoid. My heart sinks when I read the headline: rumors surrounding the family heirloom. Just when I thought we had a handle on things, life throws another curveball.
"Is everything alright?" Sophie's voice is steady, always my anchor.
"The media found out about the pocket watch," I say, frustration tinging my words.
She moves closer, peering at the screen. "That's unexpected. Where do they even get this stuff?"
"No idea, but we need to be careful," I reply, already feeling the press closing in.
As we head indoors, my mind races, apprehensive about the impact of the story. Last time something like this happened, it was chaotic—not just for me but for everyone connected to me.
We agree to drive into the city and tackle the situation head-on. Sophie is steadfast, helping me brainstorm potential responses that protect both our privacy and my public image.
By afternoon, it’s clear the news has reached far corners. The phone rings incessantly with calls from journalists, demanding quotes and interviews. Each ring adds pressure, my patience fraying at the edges. I lean into Sophie’s calm composure as we strategize.
"Maybe we address it openly, but cautiously," Sophie suggests, watching my unease.
"Like putting out a statement?" I ponder. It's not a bad idea. Remaining silent might mean letting someone else control the narrative.
When Linda, my assistant, pops in with updates, she's armed with more press requests than I care to count. Her usual efficient demeanor is tinged with concern.
"This one's catching like wildfire," she says, handing me a stack of headlines. "But some are just speculating."
Sophie speaks up, her voice a beacon of clarity. "Let's focus on facts, Alex. Control what we can."
Linda nods, taking notes as Sophie lists key points we might address without fueling the frenzy.

Later, after the office has quieted down, Sophie and I reflect on the day over takeout. Unboxed coffee cups and crumpled wrappers cover the table between us—a testament to our focus.
"Why does this feel harder than when it was just business?" Sophie asks, frustration lacing her relaxed posture.
"Because this time it's personal," I admit. "I promised myself I wouldn’t let family drama spill over again."
Her hand covers mine, grounding me. "We’re not alone in this. We have each other."
Her unwavering support means everything to me, especially when the world spins wildly out of control. I know I have to address what's happening, but I won't do it alone.
As the city lights flicker to life outside our window, we compile a draft that outlines the core truths without giving into tabloid temptation. It’s a thin line to walk—being open but guarded, transparent yet protected.
When exhaustion weighs heavily on us, Sophie squeezes my hand. "Let’s call it a night. Tomorrow's another chance to move forward."
Grateful for her insight, I nod. "Yeah. We’ll figure this out, together."

Morning breaks with a determined light, setting a hopeful tone. I wake feeling more capable—anchored by Sophie’s presence beside me, prepared to protect what matters without bowing to external pressures.
Back at the office, Linda stands ready to help implement our strategy. We divide and conquer, reaching out to trusted contacts who can help reshape public perception and stand by the truths we hold dear.
As the day unfolds, the initial storm of attention begins to lose its sting, replaced by reminders of what truly matters: truth, resilience, and the unwavering bonds we nurture with those who stand by us. And although today isn't the end, it offers a path forward.
Together, Sophie and I have shown that we can weather any storm life throws our way, strengthened by the knowledge that love and trust are our greatest allies. The world may lean in, eager and speculative, but within our bubble of truth, we are unshakeable, ready to face tomorrow with courage and conviction.
