Max Cooper is Officially Hot - Episode 1
by Kathleen Kreiser
There’s a frantic knock at my door.
Lacey! Open up! Please!
Max? Is that you?
He pounds harder.
Hurry up, Lacey! It’s an emergency!
I open the door to my dorm room and Max rushes in.
He slams it shut.
Please tell me you haven’t seen it.
Seen what?
Max gestures to my laptop.
I’m sure someone sent it to you by now.
Maybe it’s better if I show you myself.
He signs in on my laptop and pulls up an email.
I read the subject line:
"Max Cooper is Officially Hot."
Scroll down. There’s a picture.
And…oh wow.
Is there ever a picture.
It’s a selfie…
Of Max…
In the gym locker room…
Fresh from the shower.
Um…Max?
Are you naked in this picture?
The tips of his ears turn pink.
I was wearing a towel, but it’s cropped out.
Also…are you flexing?
Max grabs my pillow and hides his face in it.
I can’t stop staring at the picture.
I had no idea what Max looked like shirtless.
Someone hacked my phone and sent that photo to the whole school.
I tear my eyes away from the photo…
And look at Max.
I try to remember my priorities.
He’s hurting, and I need to comfort him.
This is awful, Max.
It’s a total privacy violation.
I know.
And that’s not the worst part.
Right on cue, there’s more pounding on my door.
Max! I know you’re in there!
Get out here! We need to talk!
Who’s that?
Remember that girl I went out with last year?
The crazy one?
Charlene?
Apparently, she saw the photo.
And now she wants me back.
There’s more pounding…
Like she’s going to bust the door down.
Ugh. This is totally humiliating.
I mean, I’ve been working out a lot.
I’ve noticed.
Max was always a little chubby.
But recently, he’s been in the gym all the time.
And it's clearly paying off.
Lacey? Are you staring at the picture?
Yes.
No.
I totally wasn’t checking out his arms.
Or his chest.
Or those abs.
Lacey…
Max reaches over and closes the laptop.
I need your help.
What do I do about Charlene?
Just be direct and reasonable.
Tell her you’re not into her.
Max, I know you’re in there with some girl!
I’m breaking down this door.
You think a woman like that listens to reason?
Charlene is about to split my door in half.
Help me, Lacey.
How?
The doorknob moves.
It sounds like she’s picking the lock.
She’s coming!
Do something!
Charlene bursts in.
Max, baby…
I’ve been looking for you all day.
Then I saw you run in here.
And I was worried you were hooking up with someone.
I glare at her.
Um…hi Charlene.
Charlene looks…relieved.
Oh, it’s just Lacey.
Just Lacey?
What’s that supposed to mean?
Oh, nothing.
I just thought he might be in here hooking up.
And I know you guys are just friends.
Oh.
So, Max…
I look at my terrified best friend.
I mouth, “trust me.”
He nods.
Actually, Charlene, Max was hooking up.
With me.
His girlfriend.
Girlfriend?
I glare at him.
Then he finally gets it…
And puts his arm around me.
Right. Lacey’s my girlfriend now.
But…I always thought you two were just friends.
Well…we were. For a long time.
But then we realized that we were…
In…love?
I look into Max’s blue eyes and smile.
It’s a genuine smile.
We’ve been best friends since high school.
He’s always there for me.
Yeah…us dating just kind of…
Makes sense.
And you love her?
Max kisses the top of my head.
Just like always.
Of course I do.
Charlene looks seriously mad.
No, I mean…you love…
Her?
Like…you don’t want someone hotter?
My blood boils.
Excuse me…
You’re seriously going to mock Lacey in front of me?
Max is angry.
I’ve never seen him angry.
Max, I…
No way.
Lacey’s the best person I know.
She likes me for who I am.
Unlike you.
Who only wants me back because of that picture.
That’s not true.
Yes it is.
How shallow can you be?
I’m not shallow.
I raise an eyebrow at her.
And she’s not your girlfriend.
You’re faking.
How would you even know?
I know everything that happens on campus.
If you two were an item…
The gossip would have hit me by now.
Well, we are definitely an item.
Oh yeah?
Prove it.
We stand there, frozen.
Charlene snorts.
That’s what I thought.
She starts for the door.
Wait.
I grab Max’s shoulders.
And kiss him on the lips.
Mmph!
I definitely startled him.
But then he starts kissing me back.
He pulls me in closer.
I put my hand on his cheek.
He’s really putting his all into this kiss.
It almost feels…
Real.
Max and I finally stop kissing and stare at each other.
Um…
That was…
Geez, get a room, guys.
Charlene rolls her eyes and leaves.
Max closes the door behind her…
And locks it.
He smiles.
Thanks Lacey. You’re the best.
I touch my lips with my fingers.
Still reeling from that kiss.
No problem. Any time.
I mean…just because I look different now…
Doesn’t mean I’m a different person.
I totally get it.
The abs don’t make the man.
Max laughs.
Exactly.
You’re the one who knows the real me.
The chubby guy who loves sci-fi.
And played tuba in the marching band.
Max groans.
I’ll never live that down, will I?
No way.
And…you’ll always see me like that, right?
I glance at the laptop on the bed…
Then back to Max.
Um…I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can anymore.
Max grins…
And a shiver of desire runs through me…
As he pulls me onto the bed.
