Mayday - Episode 1
by Chase Caldwell
Marnie, wake up!
Come on.
Huh?
Adam shakes Marnie.
We’re taking on water.
You need to get up right now, babe.
Thunder cracks outside.
Waves slosh against the side of their tiny sailboat.
Okay. Okay.
How much?
A lot!
Let’s go!
He pulls her out of bed.
She steps into nearly a foot of water.
Oh my god. What happened?
Something cracked the deck.
Okay. We need to patch it.
They wade into the galley kitchen.
Water gushes in from a hole in the ceiling.
I’ll get the kit.
You dump some of this out.
Lightning flashes through the windows.
Got it.
They splash through the water.
Adam grabs a bucket and pops open a window.
We’re gonna be okay.
Marnie pulls out a patch kit and goes to work on the hole.
I know.
Suddenly, a strong wave crashes against their boat.
It explodes with energy.
Cabinets burst open.
Pots and pans fly everywhere.
Marnie is slammed against the side.
Marnie!
Are you okay?
Water dumps in from the ceiling.
Marnie, now totally soaked, gets up.
I’m okay.
The water is nearly up to their knees now.
I’m not making a difference over here.
We need to call for help.
Marnie drops the patch kit into the water and rushes toward the radio.
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!
This is the Windchaser.
We’re taking on water and need immediate assistance.
Adam wades over to Marnie and grips her hand.
They watch the violent, roaring ocean outside their window.
I love you.
Marnie squeezes Adam’s hand.
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!
This is the Windchaser!
Suddenly, a monstrous wave rolls the boat upside down.
The force plunges it below the surface.
Marnie and Adam are submerged and sinking fast.
They frantically seek a way out.
2 days later
Adam keeps jabbing a sharpened stick into the water.
You have to aim above the fish.
I know.
The light refracts in the water.
Of course I know.
You’ve said that for days now.
They’re alone on a tiny island.
There’s ocean as far as the eye can see.
I’m just trying to help.
Well, you haven’t caught anything either!
Marnie jabs her stick into the water, too.
Nothing.
And we’re here because of you anyway.
What?
Come on, Marnie.
Don’t tell me you haven’t thought about that.
No, Adam. I haven’t.
I’ve been thinking about how to catch a fish.
The whole “let’s go live on a sailboat for a year” thing was your idea.
I just wanted a normal honeymoon.
Are you seriously blaming me for this?
It was your dream, Marnie.
You seemed pretty happy to go along with it.
I was!
For the first 6 months.
Then this happened.
Sorry if I’m not handling starvation as well as you are.
They scan the water in silence.
Marnie plunges her stick yet again.
The water turns red.
Oh my god! Oh my god!
You got one? No way!
Adam rushes over.
Marnie pulls her spear up out of the water.
A large fish writhes on the end of it.
I got one!
I can’t believe it!
They burst into laughter.
Adam kisses Marnie on the cheek.
I’m so sorry.
They turn to walk back to shore.
But before they start off, the fish wriggles off the stick.
No! No!
Wait!
It’s plops back into the water.
Get it!
Adam and Marnie give chase.
In their desperation, both stumble into the water.
The fish swims away…
Leaving only a trail of fading blood behind.
Their hope fades along with it.
31 days later
A campfire crackles in the moonlight.
Adam, now severely thin, breathes deep over a sleeping Marnie.
His eyes are wild.
He licks his lips.
He picks up a large stone and stares at Marnie.
He lifts the stone over his head, ready to slam it down on her.
Then he begins to cry.
I’m sorry.
Marnie wakes up at the sound of his words.
Adam?
What are you doing?
I’m so sorry.
He revs up to swing the stone.
But Marnie kicks him off!
What the hell!?
He tumbles through the fire, sending embers flaring.
Marnie gets to her feet.
Forgive me.
Please forgive me!
He hurls the stone at her but misses.
Adam, what’s wrong with you?
Hungry.
I’m just so hungry.
Behind him, the scattered embers ignite a tree.
Adam.
Please. Don’t do this.
She can see the madness in his eyes.
Marnie takes off and he races after her.
I’ll make it quick!
You won’t feel a thing!
She weaves between rocks and trees.
Adam, you don’t know what you’re doing!
It’s me!
Your wife!
She trips on a root and he gains on her.
I need to eat, Marnie.
I waited as long as I could!
He grabs at her feet, but she gets up just in the nick of time.
Marnie races up a hill and he follows.
Adam, please!
I’m sorry, babe.
I still love you.
Marnie reaches the top of the hill and finds a sharp cliff edge.
She’s trapped.
Do you still love me?
Adam, get away from me.
I can’t do that, Marnie.
By now, the embers have turned into flames.
They are engulfing the entire island.
Smoke billows into the night sky.
Would you close your eyes?
Please?
No!
Adam, stop right now!
He steps closer, licking his lips.
I love you, Marnie.
Marnie leaps to his side.
He grabs her arm and hurls her to the ground.
No! No!
Please don’t do this!
Adam grips her throat tight.
Marnie fights back, but he’s almost twice her size.
Shh…
It’s okay.
Just go.
Marnie’s eyes bulge as she wails on him.
Go to sleep, Marnie.
Marnie begins to fade.
That’s right.
It’ll be over soon.
Suddenly, a metallic sound can be heard in the distance.
Adam looks up to see the searchlights of a helicopter coming toward them.
Oh my god.
He lets go of Marnie’s neck and gets up.
She gasps for air.
Oh my god, it’s coming for us!
Adam looks around at the roaring fire on the island.
A mile-high plume of smoke shoots into the sky.
They found us!
I can’t believe it.
Marnie gets to her feet.
Look, babe!
We’re gonna be okay.
We’re saved!
At that moment, Marnie smashes a stone against Adam’s head.
He crumbles to the ground, lifeless.
Blood trickles from his skull.
We’re not anything.
