Not a Goodbye - Episode 1
by Kelvin Ho
Hudson, I need you to listen.
Drop what you’re doing and get out of the building.
Right now!
Who is this?
I don’t have time to explain.
Exit the lab and head straight towards the emergency stairs.
Whoever this is, leave me alone.
I’m really busy at work.
I know, but you have to leave.
You have to trust me on this.
They’re coming to kill you.
Who?
Anthony Park.
He’s wrangled up an army of cops.
Tony’s doing that? But he’s my best friend.
We’ve worked together for 5 years.
I swear he wants to kill you.
Come on, who is this?
You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.
Try me.
I’m you.
What? You’re me?
Yes. I’m you…
From the future.
Look dude…
I’m having a crazy day today at the lab.
Don’t make it any worse by messing with me.
Let me prove it to you.
You got your first kiss when you were 17.
To a girl named Maya.
That’s not exactly top-secret information.
Okay…
You have a turtle-shaped birthmark on your left thigh.
Are you spying on me?
Are there cameras in here?
No.
Enough is enough.
I’m going to call the cops.
Whatever you do, don’t call the cops!
Tony sent the cops to kill you!
They’ll be able to track you if you call them.
Please! Ask me anything!
What?
Ask me something only you would know.
No. I’m calling the cops.
Wait. I know…I’ll tell you something about Ma.
Before she died…
You were sitting next to her in the emergency room…
There was no one else in the room…
And you whispered something in her ear…
You said, “This is not a goodbye, Ma. I’m going to bring you back. I promise.”
Ma is the reason you stay up late every night working in the lab.
That’s why you named your time pod project after her…
Amy.
How do you know all this?
Because I’m you, Hudson.
There’s a pause while it sinks in.
Holy crap.
You are me.
I’m you.
And you have to listen to me now.
Okay.
Check the monitors.
There are 2 cops in the elevator, right?
Hudson looks at the security camera monitors.
He spots 2 cops in an elevator.
That’s right.
They’re here for you.
They look like ordinary cops to me…
I can even see their badges.
It’s a disguise.
Crap!
I hear the elevator.
They’re almost here.
Emergency exit. Now!
Hudson dashes for the emergency exit.
He runs down the stairs.
Exit on the 10th floor.
The cops are coming up from the staircase.
Hudson looks down at the spiraling staircase.
He sees cops running up.
How do you know all this?
I’m from the future. Remember?
Okay. I’m on the 10th floor.
Hang tight.
But they’re coming up!
They still think you’re in the lab.
Why is this happening?
Why is Tony trying to kill me?
He wants to take all the credit.
Credit for what?
Time traveling.
What?
We solved it.
Holy crap.
Does that mean you’re here right now?
Yeah. I’m really close, too.
But we’re not going to see each other.
The ramifications could be dire.
Right. I understand.
The staircase is clear now.
Go!
There’s another long pause.
More cops have arrived.
They’re guarding the ground floor and all the possible exits.
Dang it.
How am I getting out of here?
Exit on the 3rd floor.
Okay.
Which way do I go?
Go to the right hallway.
There’s a custodial room.
Do you see it?
Yes!
Go in.
There’s another pause.
Okay, I’m in.
Are there any janitorial uniforms in there?
Yes.
Put one on.
Okay. Now what?
Now you need to jump into the laundry chute.
What? No way!
All the 1st floor exits are blocked.
The only way to get out of this building is through the basement.
The chute will take you there.
It’s a 4-story drop!
Think of it as a waterslide.
We used to love those. Remember?
How could I forget?
Ma took us to the water park every summer.
You can do it.
Here goes nothing.
There’s another pause.
Okay, I’m at the basement.
You okay?
Yeah. The laundry cart broke my fall.
Great.
You see the guard by the door?
Yeah.
Hang tight while I hack into their system.
Okay.
Listen, while you do that…
Tell me a little bit about the future.
You and 3 of your colleagues win the Nobel Prize in Science.
Wow.
The 4 of you also create NextNet.
NextNet?
It’s a billion dollar corporation.
It uses Amy’s time traveling technology for space travel.
And Tony wants to kill us so he can own it all?
Precisely.
Why does he want to kill me today, though?
I’m not even close to figuring out Amy’s energy fluctuation.
You were going to figure it out tonight.
The building’s fire alarm begins to sound.
What’s happening?
As soon as the guard leaves his post, walk out.
A black van will be there to take you to safety.
Okay.
Hudson sees the guard leaving his post.
Hudson calmly walks out of the building.
Walking out…
I see the car…
Hudson hurries toward the vehicle.
Isn’t that a paradox?
What is?
If Tony kills me before I’ve solved time traveling…
Then it won’t exist.
So I must be safe, right?
If you’re here?
The door of the backseat opens.
Hudson enters.
Hey.
Future Hudson points a gun at Hudson.
Woah. You definitely are me.
What are you doing?
There are 3 other people in the car with blindfolds on.
They’re all shot in the head.
Hudson points to one of them.
That’s Tony!
And 2 of my coworkers…
What’s going on? They’re dead?
Yes.
But you said Tony sent cops to kill me.
They weren’t really there to kill you.
They were sent to protect you…
From me.
Why?
Because I’m here to stop Amy from ever happening.
These 3 helped you create it.
That’s why you killed them!
Yes. I was trying to spare your life.
But now it’s obvious Amy will always exist as long as you’re alive.
You can’t finish Amy.
What?
Ma is dead.
You have to let her go.
Your invention…it’s not going to bring her back.
Not really.
But I have to try.
I know you think you do.
Because I did, too…
In my timeline, I kept going back to save her from the crash.
But she’d still die. Just at a later point in time.
Yeah, well maybe you’re messing something up.
You don’t know how to care for her!
Hudson, stop.
I’ve traveled back to that day many times…
And you know what I learned?
Hudson crosses his arms.
He can’t even look at the future version of himself.
Her death wasn’t your fault.
It’s fate.
But it was my fault!
I forced her to take me to the water park!
There’s nothing we can do.
Okay, but why you have to kill me?
Because you become obsessed with bringing Ma back.
You shirk away from your duties at NextNet.
You lose control of it and Amy eventually ends up in the wrong hands.
Amy becomes a weapon for mass destruction.
I don’t believe you.
Future Hudson cocks his gun.
You know I’m telling the truth.
We’re one in the same.
Promise me you’ll stop.
Okay fine.
I’ll stop.
You’re lying.
I’m not.
If you were telling the truth, then I wouldn’t still be here.
I promise I’ll stop.
You’re still lying!
I’m not!
I swear!
There’s another final pause.
With his head tilted to the side…
The future version of Hudson stares at the younger version of himself.
He gives him a sad smile.
It doesn’t matter.
It’s fate.
There’s only one thing to do.
Don’t!
Future Hudson shoots Hudson in the head.
