River Run - Episode 1
by Chase Caldwell
The wood floor creaks, and my eyes flutter open.
It’s morning.
I’m in bed with my boyfriend, Will.
But we’re not alone.
A stranger stares at me from the doorway.
I feel my body tense up.
She’s my age.
There are big bags under her eyes…
And a knife in her hand.
I grip the edge of my mattress.
Will!
I shake him and he jolts up.
Huh!?
What’s going on?
The stranger smirks and steps closer.
Good morning, Will.
I see Will’s face go white at the sound of her voice.
Jenna, what are you doing here?
She moves closer to our bed.
You left me, Will.
You disappeared.
Will and I back up against our headboard.
She drags the knife along our sheets.
What’s that knife for, Jenna?
I thought you were the one.
I really did.
Will, who is this?
Will gets between the woman and me.
Then he takes my hand.
We used to date.
It’s going to be okay.
I’ll protect you.
Jenna lets out a laugh.
He’s very reassuring, isn’t he?
My mom loved him.
My dad did, too.
Jenna, I’m sorry.
I shouldn’t have left you the way I did.
You vanished!
Poof!
I didn’t know if you were alive or dead.
If you loved me or hated me.
Tears well up in Jenna’s eyes.
I see her squeeze the knife tighter.
Don’t do anything rash, Jenna.
You’re not that kind of person.
Don’t tell me what kind of person I am!
You made me this way!
Jenna reaches into her back pocket.
She pulls out two sets of handcuffs and tosses them at us.
Put those on.
We’re going for a ride.
20 minutes later
Tires squeal and I smack against hard metal.
A second later, Will rolls right into me.
I try to scream out the pain, but the tape over my mouth holds it in.
We’re in Jenna’s trunk.
Her engine roars as she haphazardly navigates the road.
Will rolls off me.
His mouth is taped shut, too.
But his eyes are filled with remorse.
How could he have predicted this?
How could he have known what this girl was capable of?
I take his hand and nod.
I don’t know how we’re going to make it out of this.
But we will.
A stinging pain shoots up my arm.
I look down at the handcuffs digging into my skin.
Tiny bits of blood drip off of them.
Will notices this, too…
And it sends him over the edge.
He takes a deep breath.
Then, with all his strength, he kicks the trunk.
It doesn’t open, but it moves just enough to encourage him.
He pounds his feet against it with fury—
Every blow moving it just a bit more.
I join in.
Back and forth.
Over and over.
Until my legs feel nearly numb.
Will lands a heavy blow.
And a sliver of light from outside slices in.
There’s hope.
We keep at it.
But then…
The car stops.
The engine shuts off.
And I hear a door slam.
Will and I exchange nervous glances and then…
The trunk flies open.
Jenna stands over us.
She reaches down and rips the tape off our mouths.
Get out.
5 minutes later
Will and I are standing on the edge of a bridge.
I rub my wrists where the handcuffs once were.
Jenna is behind us, knife in hand.
A hundred feet below, the raging water of the river flows.
Please don’t do this.
I don’t want to die.
Please.
Sorry, sweetheart.
I know this is between me and your man.
But there can’t be any witnesses.
She pats my back.
You understand, right?
Tears roll down my cheek.
Jenna, let’s just talk about this, okay?
Oh, you want to talk now?
I finally have your attention?
Then let’s talk.
Moments from now, your body is going to fall 152 feet to the water below.
If you survive the impact…
Which is highly unlikely…
You’ll be dragged two miles south and sucked into a water treatment plant.
She lets out a laugh.
Things will get messy there.
I squeeze my eyes shut.
Please don’t let this be the end.
Let her go then.
Just let Kallie go.
She doesn’t know you.
She won’t say a thing.
Right, Kallie?
I nod nervously.
Will locks eyes with me, and for a second, I almost feel safe.
You’re such a sweetheart when you want to be.
But I can’t believe a single thing you say.
When you told me you loved me last year, I thought you meant it!
My heart stops at those words.
Time slows down.
And I turn to Jenna.
Last year?
Jenna looks at me quizzically.
Yes.
Why?
Don’t listen to her, Kallie.
She’s a psycho!
Were you with her last year, Will?
No!
She’s lying!
Look at her!
She’s nuts!
Why would she lie about that?
Did you cheat on me, Will?
No!
Don’t lie!
Don’t you dare lie to me right now!
I stare Will down.
And finally, under the pressure of the moment, he breaks.
Okay.
I’m sorry, Kallie.
It didn’t mean anything.
I swear.
How could you do this to me?
To us?
We’ve been together for five years, Will.
I know!
Forgive me.
Please just—
Before I even know it, my hands jolt forward…
And press against Will. Hard.
He flies off the bridge.
His screams cascade on the way down.
They disappear with one solitary splash…
And so does he.
I watch the water rage on for a moment.
Five years…
Tears well up in my eyes.
But they don’t fall.
I look at Jenna.
And her demeanor totally changes.
She softens.
I’m so sorry.
I really am.
I didn’t know he was with you then.
I swear.
The weight of what I’ve done finally overcomes me.
I break down.
It’s okay.
It’s not your fault.
She puts a hand on my shoulder.
He made you do it.
He—
In a split second, I grab the knife from her free hand and drive it into her stomach.
She gasps for air…
And her skin turns white.
You’re right, Jenna.
This was his fault.
I press the knife farther into her.
And I pull her close.
Blood pools around my fist.
But like you said…
Then, with all my strength, I shove Jenna over the edge.
And her body plunges into the chaos below.
There can’t be any witnesses.
