Saving Evie - Episode 1
by Calla Gordon
Gabi peers through the open front door of Mr. Hamilton’s house.
She can’t make out much beyond the darkness and shadows.
H-hello? Is anybody home?
No one answers.
Gabi bites her lip.
Then she pulls out her phone and FaceTimes her boyfriend.
Cameron picks up on the third ring.
He’s inside a bathroom she doesn’t recognize—
And music thumps in the background.
He’s obviously at a party.
Hey, Gabi. What’s going on?
I thought you were babysitting for Mr. Hamilton tonight.
I am. I mean, I’m supposed to be…
But there’s something really weird going on.
Here, look.
Gabi turns the phone so that her camera is facing inside the front door.
I don’t get it. What am I looking at?
I was supposed to be here at eight…
But all the lights are off…
And the front door is wide open.
Are you sure you got the right day?
Maybe you're supposed to babysit next weekend?
I’m SURE it is tonight. Besides…
That wouldn’t explain why Mr. Hamilton left the front door open.
He’s normally really good about security.
Maybe his housekeeper left it open by accident.
The important thing is…
You can come to this party now!
Gabi hesitates.
Pwetty pwease?
Cameron makes a pouty face at the camera…
And Gabi can’t help laughing.
I guess…
Are you at Jackson’s place or—
Just then, something smashes inside the house.
Gabi gasps.
What was that?
You heard it too?!
It sounded like glass breaking.
Oh my god…
That sound came from inside the house, Cam!
Okay, that’s kind of creepy…
But it was probably just their cat knocking over a vase or something.
The Hamiltons don’t have a cat!
Calm down, Gabi.
I’m sure there’s a totally normal explanation.
But Gabi is shaking her head.
There’s something really weird happening here.
Well whatever it is, it’s not your problem.
Forget about it and come to this party.
I can’t just leave, Cam! Evie is only four.
What if something happened to Mr. Hamilton?
Like what?
I don’t know! What if he had a heart attack or something?
What if Evie’s all alone?
Call the cops if you’re that worried.
Gabi peers hesitantly through the darkened front door.
She makes a split-second decision.
I’m going inside.
What?! You can’t be serious.
Gabi, don’t even THINK about going in that house!
But Gabi doesn’t listen.
She steps closer.
I’m just going to take a quick peek around…
To make sure no one is hurt.
Gabi, this is crazy!
I have to do this.
Don’t hang up, okay?
I’ll feel better if you’re with me.
Gabi, stop! This is a horrible idea.
Shhh! Would you keep it down?
I don’t exactly want to announce my arrival.
This shuts Cameron up.
He angrily presses his lips into a line.
Gabi steps inside the dark foyer.
She can barely see a thing.
But she knows this house well.
She turns left toward the kitchen—
And slams right into a tall figure.
Gabi yelps.
What’s going on? Who’s there? I’m calling 911!
Gabi gets her bearings…
And realizes that she isn’t being attacked.
It’s okay, I’m fine.
What happened?!
Gabi swallows hard…
Then turns her phone so that Cameron can see “the figure.”
It was just a coat rack.
You’ve got to be kidding me.
Everything looks scary in the dark!
Just get out of there, Gabi.
You looked around, everything is fine.
Gabi’s about to agree with Cameron—
But then a scream pierces the air.
Did someone just—
Scream? Yes! It came from upstairs!
Get out of there. Right now!
I can’t. That sounded like a kid screaming.
What if Evie is hurt?
And what if whoever hurt her is still there?
And hurts YOU next?
Gabi peers at the staircase.
She knows Cameron is right.
This is dangerous and stupid.
But she can’t leave if Evie is in danger.
She walks toward the staircase.
Cameron lowers his voice to a harsh whisper.
Stop right now! Don’t take another step! I’m serious!
Gabi freezes.
But not because of Cameron’s order.
Cam, look!
She angles the phone toward the staircase…
Where dark liquid is splattered all along the stairs and railing.
Is that blood?
I — I think so.
And Cam, I see something else.
She climbs up the steps.
Moonlight struggles in through a hall window…
But she can just make out a foot poking out of one of the upstairs bedrooms.
She creeps closer.
And all the blood rushes out of her head.
Inside the room is Mr. Hamilton.
He’s lying facedown in a puddle of blood.
Cam is losing it — miming and gesturing like crazy.
Gabi frantically mimes back for Cam to keep it down.
Because now that she’s upstairs…
She can hear a voice coming from Mr. Hamilton’s bedroom down the hall.
She tiptoes nearer…
And the voice gets louder.
It’s a man.
And he’s MAD.
Where is it? I know you know. Don’t lie to me!
Gabi can’t see Evie…
But she can hear her whimpers coming from inside the room.
Tell me where Daddy keeps all his money and I won’t hurt you, okay?
Evie is full on crying now.
Just tell me where the safe is!
The man’s roar sends a shiver down Gabi’s back.
She can’t imagine how scared the Evie is.
She’s only four!
Gabi doesn’t think.
She just acts.
She runs out.
Hey, I have an idea!
The figure whips toward her.
And adrenaline shoots up her spine.
She can hear Cam screaming at her from the phone in her hand—
But it’s too late for second-guessing.
Let’s all play a little game of hide and seek.
Everyone find your best hiding spot.
The figure stomps toward her.
And Gabi runs—
Skidding back through the hall—
Then stumbling down the stairs.
Her plan works…
And the intruder chases her.
Only the plan works a little TOO well.
The intruder is gaining on her.
She risks a look back—
And sees the man racing down the stairs two at a time.
The bloody knife in his hand glints in the moonlight.
Gabi runs faster…
Hoping that Evie understood what she meant—
And that the little girl hid inside the laundry chute in her bedroom…
Like she always does during their games of hide and seek.
Gabi skids into the kitchen and opens the cupboard under the kitchen sink.
She shoves aside the garbage can and climbs underneath.
She just manages to get the door closed again…
When footsteps crash on the landing of the stairs.
Come out, come out, wherever you are!
Gabi clamps a hand over her mouth.
Her breaths are coming in short, sharp bursts.
Gabi can hear the man stalking through the house—
Whipping open closet doors—
And jerking furniture aside.
Gabi swallows a yelp each time.
It’s only a matter of time before he finds her.
That’s when Gabi realizes she still has her phone clutched in her hand.
She holds the phone up and drops her voice to a tiny whisper.
Cameron, are you there?
No answer.
But if she listens hard…
She swears she can hear tires whirring in the background.
Cam! Cam, are you there?
No answer.
She can’t speak any louder without alerting the intruder to her location.
She swallows a sob.
The footsteps get closer.
He’s right outside the cupboard now.
Gabi hugs her knees to her chest…
And squeezes her eyes shut.
This is it.
She’s going to die like Mr. Hamilton.
That’s when she hears it.
Sirens.
At first, she thinks they’re coming from outside.
And hope shoots through her.
But then she realizes they’re coming from the phone.
No, no, no, no!
Gabi frantically bashes at the phone, trying to stop the sounds.
But it’s too late.
The cupboard door whips open.
And a leering face smiles back at her.
Bingo.
Gabi screams.
Don’t even think about touching her!
Cameron — he’s back on the phone.
Cameron, help me! Call the police!
I’m way ahead of you, Gabi.
The sirens come into focus.
And now Gabi realizes she’s hearing the sirens outside AND on her phone.
The man jerks back, apparently hearing the sirens.
Then he runs out the front door.
But it’s too late.
A booming voice shouts from outside.
Put your hands up!
The officer’s voice echoes through Gabi’s phone.
Cam is here.
Cam called the police.
Tears streak down Gabi’s face
She looks into the phone.
Cam? Are you really here?
The screen goes crazy for a minute.
Black, gravel, sky—
Then Cam’s face comes into focus.
Flashing lights orbit behind him.
You didn’t think I’d hang up on you, did you?
A hysterical laugh forces out of her.
The police got the guy, Gabi. You can come out now.
Gabi swallows hard.
I have something I have to do first.
Gabi steps out of the cupboard.
And goes upstairs to find Evie.
