Secrets of My Billionaire Fiancé - Chapter 22
by Amina El-Taher
A few days after the awards event, life seems to settle into a pleasant rhythm. My article has done wonders, and I’m busy with new assignments while Alex dives into his projects with renewed vigor. Everything feels like it’s moving smoothly, like we’ve finally found our stride.
Then, the unexpected happens. It starts with a call. I’m at my desk, sorting through emails, when my phone rings with an unknown number. Hesitant, I answer it, and immediately my heart sinks.
“Emma Carter?” a voice asks, dripping with a hint of drama. “I’m calling regarding the article on Alex Thornton.”
“Yes, that’s me,” I reply cautiously, not liking where this is headed.
“There’s more to Mr. Thornton’s history than what you published,” they say, words pointed. “We think it’s time the public knows everything.”
The call is brief, leaving me rattled. The voice suggests they have more insights into the family scandal Alex had shared, implying repercussions that could ripple through his life and career. My mind races, the weight of the conversation pressing down on me.
I hang up and immediately call Alex. He answers quickly, his voice a welcome contrast of calm.
“Emma, everything okay?” he asks.
“I just got a call,” I say, diving straight into it. “Someone saying they know more about your past—about the scandal.”
There’s a pause, a palpable tension crackling through the line. “I see,” Alex replies, his voice steady but serious.
“Should we be worried?” I ask, trying to gauge his reaction.
“I don’t know who it could be,” he admits. “Let’s meet up and figure out our next steps.”
We decide to meet later at his office, my heart heavy with concern about what could unfold. The drive over is quiet, my thoughts circling around the impact this could have on Alex and the life he’s built post-scandal.
Arriving at his sleek office tower, I make my way to the top floor, where Alex waits. The view from his office is stunning, the city spread out below like a living, breathing map. But today, even the view can’t calm the storm within me.
Alex greets me with a reassuring smile, though his eyes reflect the seriousness of the situation. “Good to see you,” he says, leading me to sit by the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“Thanks,” I reply, trying to return the smile. “I just… didn’t expect this.”
“Neither did I,” he agrees, thoughtful. “But we need to face it, head-on.”
We talk about the call, the implications it could have. Secrets have a way of stirring the past into the present, and as much as we’ve moved forward, this reminds us that the past isn’t easily left behind.
“Our best move is to be proactive,” Alex continues, laying out a plan. “We’ll dig into this, together. If there’s more to know, we’ll uncover it first.”
I nod, grateful for his resilience and our united stance. “I’m with you all the way.”
We spend the afternoon brainstorming, discussing potential contacts and considering what counter-moves we might need if this issue gains traction. It’s a dance of strategy and support, one that highlights our strengths together.
As evening approaches, a sense of calm starts to settle over the room. While the looming challenge is real, having Alex as a partner makes it feel manageable—something we can tackle side by side.
When we finally part ways, there’s a lingering sense that whatever happens, we’ll face it together. As I drive back through the city, headlights streaming in patterns across the windshield, my thoughts stay fixed on the importance of honesty and trust.
This is a test, perhaps our greatest yet, but we’re not alone. With each passing moment, the bond between Alex and me is strengthened by the shared resolve to protect what truly matters: the truth, our values, and each other.
After arriving home, I reflect on how life is often a blend of anticipated triumphs and unexpected hurdles. But with each test, we grow, learning the importance of standing firm in the face of uncertainty.
And so, as the city settles into its night rhythm, I find solace in knowing that this story, our story, is still unfolding—imperfect, unpredictable, but shared and real. With Alex, I’m ready to continue writing each page with hope and determination, embracing both the challenges and the joys that await.
