Sight Unseen
by Michelle Rickert
I’m scared, babe.
Why?
Does your dad still keep a shotgun in the house?
WHAT?
You said your dad kept a shotgun around for scaring off bears.
Maybe. Why?
There’s something in my backyard by the woods.
Are you sure it’s not a deer?
Definitely not. I think it might be a bear.
You think?
It’s sort of in the shadows.
I can’t see it that well.
But it’s definitely not human.
What’s it doing?
Just standing there watching the house.
It’s been a long cold winter, Rich.
It must be hungry.
Please come over!
Where are you in the house?
I’m in the bedroom, looking out the window.
Just stay there – and you’ll be safe.
It can’t get inside, right?
Yeah - but what about my parents?
They’re about to come home!
What if the bear attacks them when they’re walking up to the house?!
Can’t you call and warn them?
I keep trying, but they won’t pick up.
And they’re not answering my texts.
What’s it doing now?
Hang on, let me check.
It’s closer to the house!
Come over here now!!
Are you sure it’s a bear?
I’m not 100 percent positive.
I can’t find my glasses.
So I can’t get a clear look at it.
But I’m pretty sure it’s a bear.
Please, Rich!
Bring the gun over before it gets closer.
I’m not bringing the gun. You’ll be fine.
Rich? I just realized something.
What?
I think I might have left the back door open.
It doesn’t close automatically.
You have to push it really hard.
I think I forgot to do that.
Well, that’s not good.
I know.
Whatever you do, don’t go down and check it.
I won’t.
Stay where you are.
Oh no.
What?
It’s gone.
Good. Will you calm down now?
No that means it could be anywhere.
It could even be in the house!
Do you still want me to come over?
YES.
I thought you would be on your way!
Okay, but I’m not bringing the gun.
Something just moved by the window!
Yeah, it’s still this…thing.
Now I’m not so sure it’s a bear.
There’s something really wrong about the way this thing moves.
I wish I could find my glasses.
Do you think it’s hurt?
No that’s not it…
Oh no, Rich!
What?
It’s heading for the back door.
I’m almost sure that the door is open.
What should I do?!
Rich? I just remembered.
There’s a bow and arrow in my parents’ closet.
I’m going to get it.
I need to protect myself.
Rich?
Are you there?
I can hear it!
It’s coming closer!!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Two minutes later.
I GOT IT!
WITH THE BOW AND ARROW!
RIGHT IN THE CHEST!
I…I’m pretty sure I killed it.
Liz moves closer to the body.
She gasps in shock.
The body on the floor is Rich.
He is wearing a thick brown coat.
By his side is a bouquet of two-dozen roses.
Rich looks at Liz and speaks weakly.
I was trying…
To surprise you…
We've been dating for six months…
Oh my god, babe!
Liz pushes Rich's thick dark hair out of his eyes.
She runs her palm along his bearded cheek.
I just…
I wanted to make it special.
I wanted to tell you that…
Rich passes out, before telling her what he wanted to say.
Liz calls 911.
Then she collapses on top of Rick, sobbing.
Her tears dampen the fur of his coat.
She can’t stop crying.
Not when the ambulances arrive…
Not when the doctor calls to say the arrow missed Rich's vital organs…
And reports that Rich will live.
Not when he wakes up and looks into her eyes…
And mouths the words he wanted to say all along:
I Love You.
