The Best Swipe - Episode 1
by Stephen Sanow
I’m in the dining hall with my roommate, Angela…
Mindlessly swiping through guys on a dating app.
The one I’m looking at now is cute…
But he has too many photos with other girls.
I swipe left.
The next guy isn’t exactly my type…
But he does look good shirtless.
I swipe right.
Then the next guy appears.
Oh my god!
What?
Colin. He’s on the app.
Colin has been my best friend since freshman year…
And I also happen to have a huge crush on him.
I look helplessly at Angela.
Which way should I swipe?
Swipe right!
This is your chance to move out of the friend zone!
But what if he doesn’t like me back?
I’ll feel terrible.
But then how will you know if he does like you?
Okay. But what happens if we match?
Then you can go on a date with him.
But what if he swipes right just to be nice?
And then I ask him out and he says no.
Then he says no.
But you have to swipe right.
Because I don’t want to go another year hearing you gush about Colin…
And analyzing every interaction you two have.
She’s right.
I have to swipe right.
My finger hovers over his profile photo.
He’s smiling.
His flawless dimples are in full effect.
His hand is midway through his thick brown hair.
My heart pounds.
I close my eyes…
And swipe.
Right.
My phone dings.
I open my eyes.
And see that…
It’s a match!
My heart races even faster.
Oh my god!
It’s a match!
He swiped right too!
Yesss!!!
Then my excitement quickly turns to fear.
Now what?
Should I message him?
No.
He has to make the first move.
I know. But we’re friends.
Maybe we don’t have to do that dating protocol tango.
Look, Jill. If you want to be more than friends…
Then you have to stop acting like a friend.
So you need to wait.
Okay.
I take a bite of my salad.
Then I see Colin in the dining hall…
Grabbing some food.
Oh no! Colin’s here!
Angela turns to look.
Don’t look!
But it’s too late.
Colin notices us looking at him.
He and I make eye contact.
Butterflies swarm through my stomach.
Then I do this weird half-wave thing…
With a smile that makes me look like I have indigestion.
Colin smiles awkwardly and waves at us.
But then he turns away…
And sits at a different table.
Why is he not coming over to us?
Do you think he already saw that we matched?
I wouldn’t read too much into it.
But he always sits with us.
That means he definitely saw it.
My heart sinks.
Maybe he just swiped right to be nice.
Or he wasn’t paying attention…
And swiped right on me by accident.
You should go talk to him.
No way!
I don’t want to go over there and embarrass myself even more.
So you’re going to hide from him forever?
Yeah, I am.
Isn’t he coming over tonight for movie night?
You’re going to have to see him then.
I’ll say I’m sick.
Angela rolls her eyes.
Then she gets up and shouts at Colin:
Hey, Colin!
What are you doing?!
Since you’re not going over there…
I’m making him come over here.
Colin! Colin!
I hate you so much right now.
You’ll thank me later.
Colin gets up and walks over to us.
He looks nervous.
What’s up, Angela?
I just wanted to say hi.
Hi.
Hey, Jill.
Hey.
I can barely look at him.
My nerves are higher than Mt. Everest.
I gotta go.
Where are you going?
I forgot I have class.
But you two have fun.
Angela winks and leaves.
How could she leave me right now?
Colin stands there awkwardly.
I don't know what to say.
Then I come up with something brilliant.
How’s your day going?
Good.
There’s a very long pause.
Usually it’s so easy for us to talk.
But right now, it feels impossible.
Finally, I just can’t take it anymore.
I decide I just have to put it out there.
So…we matched.
What?
I try to read him.
I look into his honey-brown eyes.
I see my best friend.
The one I’ve shared so many late-night conversations…
And dumb inside jokes with.
The one who knows me better than almost anyone else.
I don’t know if you swiped right on me by mistake…
Or if you were just being nice.
But I swiped right on you because I like you.
I’ve always liked you.
I’m afraid of what he’s about to say.
But at least it’s finally out there.
Colin looks at me.
Then he smiles…
And flashes those dimples.
I’ve always liked you too, Jill.
My heart almost pops out of my chest.
What?
I swiped right on you yesterday.
I didn’t know we matched until you told me just now.
I thought you swiped left.
I felt so embarrassed.
That’s why I didn’t sit next to you.
Well…I’m glad we cleared that up.
I look at him shyly.
So what now?
Do we go on a date?
We definitely should.
But I also have an idea.
What’s that?
Colin sits next to me…
He touches my cheek, and moves my hair behind my ear.
Then he kisses me.
We kiss for a long time.
Ahem…
I see Angela standing next to me.
Colin and I stop kissing.
I forgot my backpack.
Angela pulls her backpack off Colin’s chair.
She whispers in my ear.
I told you so.
Thanks.
Oh, and if you two start dating…
You can’t make me feel like the awkward third wheel all the time.
Deal?
Deal.
Deal.
Also, I won’t be at movie night tonight.
As a courtesy.
Now go back to whatever you were doing…
But also, you guys are in the dining hall.
And a lot of people are looking…just so you know.
Angela leaves.
There are a lot of people here.
Maybe we can save it till tonight.
Or maybe not…
Colin leans in and kisses me again.
Everything feels so right.
And I’m just another girl…
Who fell for her best friend.
