The Black Car - Episode 1
by Vera Mascherata
Did you invite someone over?
No, I’m at work.
Weird. Because a black car just pulled into our driveway…
And now it’s parked in front of the house with its lights on.
Did anyone get out?
No. It’s just sitting there.
It’s kinda creepy.
You don’t recognize the car?
I don’t think so.
Except…
It looks just like Mom’s car.
But it can’t be, Thea.
Mom’s dead.
I know.
And I know the accident totaled her car.
But there’s something about this black car outside…
What is it?
I just…I can’t see anyone inside it.
I don’t think anyone’s in the driver’s seat, but I also didn’t see anyone get out.
And it looks JUST like Mom’s car. I’m telling you.
It’s even parked in the same place that she parks it.
I mean…parked it.
Do you want me to call our landlord?
Or maybe the cops?
Hello? Thea, are you there?
You’re not going out there, are you?
I’M TRAPPED.
WHAT?!
I went to go check out the car.
And I was right. No one was inside it, even though it was running.
I opened the door…
And then it felt like someone pushed me from behind!
It was a hard push, so I fell into the car.
And the door slammed behind me.
Omg! Did you see the person who pushed you?
No! I think I’m completely alone.
I don’t like this…
Get out of the car and go back into the house.
I can’t! I’m trying to open all the doors and windows.
But everything’s stuck.
I’m just sitting here alone, while the engine’s running.
Can you climb into the driver’s seat and start driving?
I tried that. It’s like the gas pedal’s broken.
Okay, I don’t like this…
I’m calling the police right now. Hold on!
Oh god, Poppy…
The car’s moving.
WHAT?!
Yeah. It’s like an invisible person’s driving it.
Are you still in the driver’s seat?
Is there anything you can do to stop it?
No…I can’t even turn the wheel.
And the pedals still won’t budge either.
The car just peeled out into traffic, Poppy.
Oh my god, it’s swerving all over the road!
What do I do?!
I don’t know…
I’m still talking to the cops.
Stay calm. Maybe they’ll know what to do.
And keep texting me so I know you’re okay.
God, I wish there was a way to tell people to watch out for this car…
It’s going to hit someone!
Don’t say that! I’m so worried about you.
Where are you now?
Still on the highway.
Wait, no. Okay, we’re turning off.
Oh god, we’re headed into the woods!
Are you in the front seat?
Yeah. I’m behind the wheel but I can’t DO anything.
What road are you on?!
I’m not on a road anymore.
I can’t see anything…
It’s so dark and we keep turning!
Are the cops coming?!
They’re trying. It’s kind of hard to track you down…
And I mean, how could they possibly stop you if they did?!
Wait! Did you try the emergency brake?
I’m too scared.
We’re going 90mph, and we’re in the WOODS, Poppy.
What if I pull the brake and make the car crash?
Yeah, but what’s your other option?
Okay, fine. I’ll pull it.
Ahh! The emergency brake just came off in my hand!!
Oh my god!
Okay, I’m trying to leave work.
Please hurry!
I’ll be there as soon as I can.
Poppy, I’m freaking out. I don’t know if I can wait…
You have to.
The car has to run out of gas eventually, right?
So maybe I could just try to follow you?
In case, you know, the car stops and I can help you?
Woah, you’re right. It’ll definitely run out of gas.
It’s hovering above empty already.
This is so like Mom.
She never kept enough gas in her car…
Thea. I know you miss her.
I miss her too.
I know how much it hurts that she’s gone.
But what’s happening to you right now?
This isn’t about Mom.
You’re literally being kidnapped.
But I’m telling you, Poppy. I KNOW this car.
It’s Mom’s car. It’s like 15 years old!
It can’t possibly be her car.
It was completely wrecked, remember?
Wait…this is weird.
The car is slowing down…
Good! Do you know where you are?
No…
There are trees everywhere.
I’m all disoriented. We made so many turns.
Okay, I’m about to pass our place now.
Try to find a street sign so I know where to go.
Huh, this is strange.
I can see all this orange light by our house.
Do you think that’s the cops?
Poppy, I know where I am!
I’m way up on that big hill behind our house. I can see…
Wait, what ARE those lights?
I see them. I know what you’re talking about.
OMG, POPPY DON’T DRIVE DOWN THERE.
OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE.
I KNOW! I SEE IT.
I drove away from it. I saw it in time.
How did this happen?
I don’t know…
It looks like it completely exploded.
Yeah. Everything’s burning.
Even the woods out back.
Thank goodness you weren’t inside…
It must have been the gas main or something.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t be burning this much already.
What about you? Where are you now?
The car stopped.
It’s just sitting here, on the top of the hill.
You know, the spot where you can see the rest of town?
Mom’s spot?
Yeah.
So you’re safe?
The cops are with you?
Yes, I’m calling the fire department right now.
Can you get out of the car?
I’ll try.
Oh my god.
Mom’s lanyard was in the pocket of the door.
It has all her keys and tchotchkes on it.
Even the reindeer with only one antler?
Even her.
Woah. That’s…unbelievable…
Dad said everything in the car was destroyed.
The keys, the clothes we kept forgetting to donate.
I know. I remember thinking how sad that was.
How there was…just nothing left.
Listen, I…I think Mom was with you tonight.
She came and picked you up…
She knew our house was going to explode.
She saved you, Thea.
I know.
Okay, the car doors just opened.
I can get out.
Good. I just told the police where you are.
They’re coming to pick you up.
Okay. Tell them they can take their time though.
I want to sit for a minute.
Maybe listen to the radio. Roll the windows down.
It’s a beautiful night.
