The Case of Archibald Tate - Episode 1
by Kayla Parent
So let me get this straight…
You’re spending the weekend babysitting your girlfriend’s grandmother?
It’s not babysitting. Don’t be mean.
She just elderly. I’ll only be there in case of emergencies.
Whatever. It’s babysitting in my mind.
How did you manage to get roped into it?
Gina and her mom are going to Florida.
Because one of her aunts passed away suddenly.
And they’re worried about leaving her grandmother alone.
Don’t you feel weird about it?
I don’t know. Kind of?
But when Gina texted me, I knew I had to help.
We just started dating…
I’m trying to earn points here.
There are definitely better ways to do that.
Maybe.
But Gina says her grandmother lives in a mansion.
I’ll get a king bed, big screen TV, the works.
Should be a relaxing weekend.
What about the “babysitting” part, dummy?
Stop calling it that.
Gina’s grandmother is still living her life.
I’m really just there if something goes wrong.
And get this…
Gina said her grandmother doesn’t leave her room.
What do you mean?
She likes to keep to herself.
So she just stays upstairs all day.
Gina says I probably won’t even see her.
Should be a piece of cake.
I don’t know, man.
Sounds kind of creepy to me.
Yeah, yeah, I’ll text you later.
I gotta hit the road.
An hour later.
Dude, I’m so pissed.
Why??
Just got to her grandmother’s house.
It’s like 300 years old.
I thought you said it was a mansion??
More like a manor.
It’s super dark and dusty.
WTH.
So Gina lied to you??
Well, no.
She said I’d get a king bed and a TV.
And that’s here in the bedroom she told me to sleep in.
But there’s no way I’m sleeping in there.
Why not??
It’s on the fourth floor at the end of the hall.
So it was really secluded.
There are these pictures of some old-timey dude hanging everywhere.
And here’s the thing…
They kind of look like me.
What?! That is next level creepy.
I told you this was a bad idea.
Any sign of the grandmother?
Nope.
But I heard her TV going.
Her suite is also on the fourth floor.
So you don’t have to go say hi or anything?
Not according to Gina.
So weird, dude.
I know.
I’ll probably just sleep here in the living room.
Watch movies on my phone.
The crazy things you do for love…
Sucks to be you.
Yeah, yeah.
I chuckle to myself…
Then start scrolling through my phone looking for movies.
I didn’t want to tell Danny…
But the house is actually even creepier than I let on.
It creaks and groans.
There are random drafts…
And dust everywhere.
It’s clear that no one takes care of it.
But whatever, Gina’s worth it.
When I feel myself getting tired…
I call her to say goodnight, but she doesn’t answer.
I leave her a quick message…
Then close my eyes.
2:41 a.m.
I wake up suddenly.
The hairs on my arms are standing on end.
I look around, feeling disoriented.
The room is completely dark except for the hall light.
A few seconds pass…
Then I hear it.
Growling.
I whip my head over to the hallway.
I can just see the top of a woman’s head peeking out from behind the wall.
It’s about two feet from the bottom of the floor…
So she’s crouching.
One of her hands is sprawled in front of her.
When she sees me looking…
She quickly disappears.
Horrified, I don’t move for a few seconds.
Then I hear a small whisper.
“Arch. Arch. Arch.”
And then the pitter patter of feet going up the stairs.
Holy crap that was creepy.
I reach for my phone…
And call Gina.
She doesn’t answer.
So I spend the next hour trying to calm my racing heart.
Trying to convince myself it was just a fluke.
Or part of a dream.
And eventually, I drift off to sleep again.
4:57 a.m.
I wake up in a panic…
Swatting at my arms.
Had someone been touching me?
Remembering what happened earlier in the night…
I instantly jump off the couch.
And turn just in time to see Gina’s grandmother shuffle out of the room quickly on all fours.
I hear her voice again.
“Arch. Arch. Arch.”
I run around the living room…
Turning on all the lights.
I blow up Gina’s phone…
But still no answer.
No way I’m staying here another night.
This is too freakin’ much, even for me.
Even to make Gina happy.
But I don’t want to just leave without telling her…
So I decide to sit and wait for her to call me back.
She doesn’t call me until 9 a.m.
And it’s from her mother’s phone.
I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA the past few days, babe.
There’s been so much going on.
What do you mean MIA?
We were texting all day yesterday.
Impossible.
I haven’t had a phone for three days.
I don’t know what you’re talking about…
But I need to talk to you about your grandmother.
She’s out of her room and completely freaking me out.
Ummm, what are you talking about?
What do you mean what am I talking about?!
I’m talking about your grandma!
I slept in the living room and—
Wait, wait wait.
Whose living room?
Sean, whose house are you in?!
Your grandma’s!
We texted about this!
I told you I was going!
At this point my voice is shaky.
Sean, I lost my phone there three days ago.
It must have been when we were in the café together.
Because that’s where I found it.
Remember? That day that creepy old lady kept staring at us?
What?
Sean…I can see your texts now…
And I definitely wasn’t the one texting you…
My grandma isn’t even alive.
Now my hands are shaking too.
So…who’s been texting me from your phone then?
As I ask the question…
A loud voice suddenly sounds from nearby.
ARCH?!
WHERE ARE YOU ARCH?!
Gina must hear it too…
Because her voice gets louder in my ear.
Sean, get out of there now!
We’ll get your things later!
Just go!
I don’t have to be told twice.
I make a run to the door…
But when I pass the stairs…
I’m too late.
The knife sinks into my back…
And I fall to the floor.
The next day.
The Sanford Gazette.
Headline: Tragedy at the Manor.
Sean Williams, 19, was found stabbed to death this weekend at Tate Manor.
The woman holding the knife?
Gladys Tate.
She was taken into police custody.
If you were around 40 years ago…
You might recognize her name.
Her late husband was also found stabbed to death at Tate Manor.
Some say Gladys was responsible.
But she was never charged.
And at this point…
We may never find out the truth about what happened…
To Archibald Tate.
