The Children - Episode 2
by Mia Siegert
Hey, Doug? Do you know where Calvin is?
Why are you texting me?
Because you’re my husband’s brother and I’m worried about him.
He sent me some really…weird texts…
I don’t know where he is.
Oh. No idea at all?
You know that Calvin hasn’t talked to me in weeks, right?
What?!
Not a word.
That’s impossible. You work together. You’re so close—
I feel like any time I see him, he’s texting you.
I don’t know who he’s texting, but it isn’t me.
Are you sure you didn’t forget?
Maybe there was a miscommunication or something?
Why are you so hell bent on this?
It’s kind of a long story, but…
I’m worried about him.
And I just want to know where he is.
Look, I don’t have anything against you…
But I don’t want anything to do with Calvin anymore.
Wait, what?
Calvin’s no longer my brother.
Why would you say something like that?
He’s dead to me—
Dead to our whole family.
And after what he did, he should be dead to you too.
What did he do?
Doug, I’m freaking out. There are news vans everywhere—
Someone even broke the window.
Keira sends picture of the brick that reads GIVE BACK OUR CHILDREN.
What did he do?
You don’t know?
He sent me weird texts. He told me to go to the basement.
Said someone would get me down there, but then his phone disconnected.
Oh my God…you need to give your phone to the police.
Please tell me what’s going on. I’m so confused.
I guess it’s better you know sooner rather than later.
Brace yourself and turn on the TV.
Make sure you’re sitting.
He told me not to turn on the TV.
Forget what Calvin said. Just…turn it on.
And for what it’s worth…I’m so, so sorry.
Keira turns on the TV. There’s an image of her house surrounded by news vans and mobs of people.
At the bottom, the headline says…
PEDIATRICIAN WANTED FOR THE KIDNAPPING OF SEVERAL CHILDREN.
In the top corner is a picture of Calvin, and beneath it is his name/title: CALVIN PIPER, MD.
There’s been a mistake—
This isn’t something Calvin would do.
Keira, he did it.
I don’t believe it. Do you really think he’s capable of something like this?
You’re his brother. You work with him—
So you’ve seen how many underprivileged children he helps for free.
And what about the massively high ratings as a pediatrician?
He’s the best in the state. He’s not a predator. He’s NOT.
He told you he screwed something up, didn’t he?
Yeah — but making a mistake doesn’t mean he’s a monster.
I know him — and this isn’t him.
Can you truthfully say you believe he did something like this?
It’s…out of character for him.
And you’re right. The charges against him don’t fit the guy I’ve known since I was in diapers.
He was framed.
By who?
I don’t want to be a downer, but think about the cases you’ve seen in news over the years.
All the kidnappings in the past.
You know how they interview the neighbors and everyone says they had no idea?
No one ever suspects a psychopath.
Especially people close to the abuser.
So that’s it? You just believe the news instead of your own brother?
Considering how weird he’s been acting, yeah.
It’s not him.
I trust him — so I’m going to the basement workroom like Calvin said.
Someone’s going to pick me up, and then I’ll be able to get some answers.
Don’t you dare.
The police are probably on their way and they’ll have a search warrant.
If you follow his orders, you’ll be an accessory.
Not happening. Because Calvin didn’t do anything wrong.
He told me he made a mistake. It can’t be this.
Keira, this is a terrible idea. No one is coming to get you.
It doesn’t make sense. How could anyone get inside anyway?
Your house is surrounded. There’s no way in.
Keira sighs. Doug has a point.
How WOULD anyone be able to get in when the home is surrounded?
But before Keira can reply, a text pops up.
Honey, are you down in the workroom yet?
Wait — how are you going to get in?
Keira, we don’t have much time—
Please. I’ll tell you as soon as you’re here.
Right. On my way.
Be fast. Love you.
I love you, too.
Keira returns to texting Doug.
Calvin texted me. I have to go.
Wait for the police. Please.
Before Keira can reply, she hears another crash—
The sound of breaking glass. She’s in danger.
People are trying to get inside.
I have no choice — I need to go.
Keira, don’t! Please!
Keira goes to the cupboard where they have kept emergency water jugs and canned food in case of natural disaster.
Everything’s missing except for one bottle of water.
The hair rises on the back of her neck.
The emergency supplies are gone.
What?
Keira sends a picture of the empty cupboard.
I’ve only got one jug of water.
Shit. Don’t move—
I’m driving over there. I’ll come for you. Don’t move.
I have to! People are trying to get in!
A text pops up from Restricted again.
You’re in danger.
You need to get to the workroom.
NOW!
