The Ex-Wife's Ultimate Payback - Chapter 5
by Lucía Moretti
The gala has ended, leaving behind the scent of expensive perfume and echoes of shared laughter. I step out into the cool night air, my mind buzzing with possibilities. The talk with Alexander hasn’t given me all the answers, but it’s a start. Now, it’s time to dig deeper.
The city lights twinkle around me as I make my way to a small cafe nearby. It’s quiet now, most of the world asleep, but the night feels full of promise. I wrap my fingers around a warm cup of tea, savoring the moment. My mind drifts back to the conversations I had at the gala and the people I’ve reconnected with.
One thing is clear—I need access to Alexander’s world if I’m going to understand what’s really going on. The gala has opened doors, but I need a more permanent way in, a chance to observe and learn from the inside.
That’s when I remember Alexa, the project lead, who mentioned an upcoming deal. She seemed friendly enough, open to new ideas. I decide I’ll reach out to her, figure out how to position myself in this world without raising too many eyebrows. If I can ally with her, it might just give me the inroad I need.
The next day, I muster the courage to send a message, requesting to meet for lunch. To my delight, she replies with a cheerful agreement. The stage is set.
When I arrive at our chosen cafe, Alexa is already there, sipping a latte and scrolling through her phone. Her blond hair falls perfectly over her shoulder, just like it did when I first saw her at the gala.
“Isabelle!” she calls out, waving me over with a smile. “I’m so glad you could make it.”
“So am I,” I reply, sliding into the seat opposite her. “Thank you for taking the time to meet me.”
“Of course!” Alexa beams. “I’ve heard so much about you. Alexander speaks highly of you—you must’ve made quite an impression.”
Her words surprise me, but I hide it with a smile. “I’m just trying to catch up on everything I’ve missed. Things sure have changed.”
Alexa nods, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “They have, but there’s always room for fresh perspectives.”
As we chat, I steer the conversation towards the upcoming deal she’d mentioned. “I heard you’re leading some exciting new projects,” I say, settling my elbows on the table. “What are you working on these days?”
“Oh, there’s always something!” she laughs. “Right now, we’ve got a major deal in the works—something to do with clean energy. It’s bound to shake things up.”
“That sounds fascinating,” I say, genuinely intrigued. The world has changed so much, and I realize Alexander’s ventures have adapted to these changes. “If you ever need an extra pair of hands, I’d love to help where I can.”
Alexa’s eyes light up. “Actually, we could use someone with your background. Why don’t you come by the office next week? I’m sure Alexander wouldn’t mind.”
My heart skips at the prospect. This is exactly what I’d hoped for—a chance to get closer without forcing my way in. “I’d love that. Thank you, Alexa.”
As our lunch wraps up and we go our separate ways, I feel like I’m gaining ground—not just in Alexander’s world but in my understanding of it.
The days pass quickly, and soon enough, I find myself standing in the lobby of Alexander’s office building. It’s modern and sleek, full of glass and polished wood. As I take the elevator up, memories flood back—the excitement and the anticipation.
When I step out into the bustling office, I’m greeted with curious smiles and nods. Alexa introduces me to the team, explaining that I’ll be observing their latest projects. The work is fascinating, and immersing myself in it does more than simply update me on industry trends. It gives me insight into how Alexander’s mind operates, his current priorities, and the direction he’s steering his empire.
Throughout the day, I jot down notes and ideas, engaging in conversations that allow me to see everything from a fresh angle. Each interaction brings me closer to understanding the shifts since I left.
As I settle into this new role, I realize that this is just the beginning. By gaining ground in Alexander’s world, I’m also getting closer to figuring out where I fit into it, and what this means for us both.
Each day that ends leaves me a little more sure. I have found a way back in—not just to Alexander’s world but to the parts of myself that belong there too. It’s a long road ahead, one where I’ll need to balance past emotions with this new purpose, but I’m ready for the journey.
