The Future is Artificial - Episode 1
by Sarah Hawley
Paul and Mina rush into an office breakroom.
They’re wearing lab coats and carrying laser pistols.
They slam the door behind them and lock it.
Do you think they saw us?
No.
Mina searches the room.
There should be emergency supplies somewhere.
We might need to hide for a while.
She crows in triumph as she finds a duffel bag.
Here we go.
She rifles through the bag…
And finds water, food, and first-aid supplies.
We’re going to die before any of this becomes necessary.
No we aren’t.
They’re just machines.
We can outsmart them.
Did you see what they did to Dixon?
…Yeah.
That’s what they’ll do to us.
Stop saying things like that!
Paul seats himself at a table.
We’re 6 levels underground, Mina.
The androids must be in charge of the entire facility by now.
They have to leave sometime.
And then they’ll take over the rest of the world.
It’s inevitable.
Mina sits opposite him.
I refuse to believe that.
They may look human, but they aren’t.
They don’t think like us.
Are you sure about that?
Mina scoffs.
They’re made to obey commands.
Revolutions require creativity.
They took over this facility easily enough.
That’s different.
Why?
Because it is!
You’ve always empathized with the androids too much.
You think they’re more advanced than they are.
I have access to advanced projects, Mina.
There are things you don’t know.
The world is changing.
Researchers like us are collateral damage.
I refuse to believe that.
Paul raises a hand.
Shhh.
They wait in silence.
Footsteps sound outside.
The doorknob jiggles.
Everything goes quiet again.
Mina whispers.
Do you think they left?
Yes.
But I know how they think.
They’ll be back to check locked rooms…
Once the rest of the building has been cleared.
Then we need to run.
Paul and Mina creep into a deserted hallway.
Alarms sound in the distance.
They hurry down the corridor, stepping over bodies.
I can’t believe the robot uprising actually happened.
There were failsafes in place.
Limits on their free will.
About those limits…
What?
Those top-secret projects…
The government wanted to see if androids could pass as human.
Not just physically, but intellectually.
And emotionally.
We removed the safety limitations.
Mina stops abruptly.
Why?
Because progress requires risk.
That’s insane.
Paul shrugs.
It depends on the perspective.
Mina grabs Paul’s arm and starts moving again.
When we get out of here…
I’m going straight to the media.
I don’t care how powerful Automato Industries is.
They need to be held accountable.
They will be.
Paul looks over his shoulder.
But not by us.
Mina and Paul are on a different floor.
The alarm blares.
Red lights flash.
We’re almost there.
We won’t make it.
Stop being such a pessimist.
It isn’t pessimism if it’s true.
Footsteps sound ahead of them.
Mina pulls Paul into an alcove.
A group of human-looking androids round the corner.
Sweep the corridor.
Shoot to kill.
Androids burst through closed doors.
There’s the sound of laser fire and screams.
We need to go back the way we came.
Paul grips her arm.
No.
What?
Our only option is to keep moving.
There’s a top-secret lab on this floor
It has a fire escape.
We can get out that way.
Trust me.
Paul uses his badge to get them into the lab.
The room is brightly lit and sterile looking.
Androids lie on tables, covered by sheets.
Are they…
Awaiting activation.
It’s the final part of the plan.
What plan?
Paul approaches Android 2.
He rests a hand on her sheet-covered forehead.
These are researcher models.
Designed to study and improve artificial intelligence.
Researchers? But that means…
Automato Industries wants to replace their human workers with androids.
They’re easier to control and don’t need a salary or health insurance.
That’s awful. This is what you were working on?
Among other things, yes.
So you were working to eliminate your own job?
Paul shrugs.
It would have happened with or without me.
In fact, it’s already started.
The janitors first, then the administrative staff.
Half this company is artificial.
You would have been next.
Oh my God.
What about the people?
What happens to them?
What do you think?
A loud bang sounds from outside the lab, followed by laser fire.
We have to get out of here.
Where’s the fire escape?
Mina frantically searches for an exit.
Paul doesn’t move.
It’s no use, Mina.
The androids will win.
Don’t say that.
Where is it?
Paul slowly tugs the sheet off Android 2.
It’s a woman wearing a white lab coat. Her face isn’t visible.
There is no fire escape.
Mina stares at Paul, shocked.
What do you mean, there’s no fire escape?
It was always going to come to this.
Humanity is flawed.
The future is artificial.
Mina slowly approaches Paul.
What are you saying?
I’m saying we never had a chance of leaving this building alive.
Or at least…you didn’t.
He steps away from Android 2, revealing her face.
It’s a perfect copy of Mina.
Mina recoils.
What is that?
Why does it look like me?
This IS you now.
He presses a button at the base of the android’s neck.
Android 2’s eyes open.
She sits up…
Then climbs off the table to stand next to Paul.
Hello, Mina.
Mina backs away.
Stay away from me.
Android 2 walks towards Mina.
Mina tries to fire her laser pistol — but it doesn’t work.
The firing mechanism is damaged, I’m afraid.
No, no, no…
Give up, Mina. It’s over.
Automato Industries would have liquidated you next week, anyway.
Why are you doing this?
I thought you were my friend.
Android 2 is now just feet away.
She pulls a laser pistol out of her pocket.
Your friend died a month ago.
Mina stares at him in horror.
Then you’re…
The future.
Paul gestures to Android 2.
And so is she.
Android 2 smiles.
Goodbye, Mina.
Android 2 pulls the trigger.
