The Girl Who Disappeared - Episode 1
by Grey Kieffer
I think I’ve been seeing a ghost.
I haven’t told anyone…
But for the past few days…
Something’s been happening.
And right now, I’m feeling it again.
It’s midnight.
My eyes flip open.
And I just can’t help myself.
Once again, I’m being drawn to the roof.
I throw aside my covers…
And crawl out my window.
The cool night breeze touches my face.
And then I see her.
Floating a foot off the roof…
A little girl is sitting cross-legged beneath the stars.
I hold my breath.
My heart pounds as I try to creep away.
And for the first time…
She speaks.
Hi.
My name’s Cornelia.
I jolt and nearly fall off the roof.
Don’t go.
Please. Stay.
Don’t hurt me!
Her little head swivels towards me.
I don’t want to hurt you.
I want to help you.
I catch my breath and try to speak.
What—
What do you want from me?
The little girl starts to giggle.
Oh, Emily…
The question is…
What do you want from me?
All the muscles in my body tense.
How do you know my name?
Are you real? What’s happening?!
I know how you feel.
What are you talking about?
That feeling…
Like you don’t belong here.
Like there must be more.
My eyes widen in disbelief.
How on earth could she know that?
A strange smile creeps across her ghostly face.
Who are you?
A door slams from inside the house.
My head snaps toward the sound.
I hear my mother call out my name.
And then, when I look back…
The little girl is gone.
I tuck myself back into bed.
My mom cracks my bedroom door.
Are you alright, sweetie?
I thought I heard you talking to someone.
I’m okay.
I just had a bad dream.
She kisses me on the head.
Sleep well, honey.
But I can’t sleep…
All night long I think about that girl…
And what she said.
The next day…
I go over to my boyfriend’s house.
I give him a big hug when he opens the door.
Hey there!
He hugs me back.
Is everything alright?
I hold back tears in my eyes.
Yeah, I’m fine.
He pulls away, looking at me.
What’s wrong?
He always knows when I’m holding back.
I—
I need to talk to you.
We go up to his room and sit on his bed.
Something has been happening these past few nights.
He looks concerned.
What do you mean?
This is going to sound ridiculous…
But you have to believe me.
Of course I’ll believe you.
I’ve been seeing a…
I choke on my words.
I’ve been talking to a ghost.
Grant’s face contorts into a smile.
Then he starts to chuckle.
Grant…I’m serious.
Emily…
You’re probably just having nightmares.
Please…
You’re the only person in the world who understands me.
I can’t be honest with anyone else.
If you don’t believe me…
Who will?
What do you want me to say?
I don’t believe in ghosts.
I’m sorry.
I look down at the floor.
Okay…
If you don’t believe me…
Come over tonight at midnight.
You want me to sneak out at midnight?
I nod.
Yes. I need you to understand.
He takes a deep breath and furrows his brow.
Fine, I’ll see you tonight.
At dinnertime…
My mom keeps prodding me about my behavior.
You seem off, sweetie.
You’ve been moping around.
Tell me what’s wrong.
I change the conversation.
Mom, who lived here before we did?
She looks up from her plate.
Why?
I’m just curious.
A family lived here.
About ten years ago…
They sold the house to us.
Why did they move?
My mom sighs.
Something happened.
They left town in a hurry.
My heart beats.
What happened?
My mom puts her fork down.
What do you care?
Just tell me!
They had a daughter, okay?
She was about your age…
She disappeared one day.
And the parents couldn’t stand living here anymore.
They put the house up for sale, and we bought it.
My water glass drops from my hand.
It shatters into pieces on the floor.
Emily! What’s wrong with you!
Stop yelling at me!
Don’t you talk back to me!
I throw my plate onto the ground…
And storm upstairs.
I lock my door behind me…
And drop to the floor.
I think about Cornelia…
And I can’t help wondering…
If I had the ability to disappear completely…
Would I?
When midnight finally comes…
I slide open my window…
And step outside.
Pssst! Hey!
Grant climbs up the drainpipe.
We sit together on the edge of the roof.
Thank you so much for coming.
Of course.
I feel the sensation again.
The pulling…
You feel that, right?
Feel what?
Are you serious?
Emily…
I think you’re just making this up.
And then, right behind Grant…
Cornelia steps shyly into view.
Hi Emily.
I get a shiver down my spine.
There! There she is!
Grant whips around.
Cornelia giggles.
What are you talking about?!
There’s no one here.
I stand up on the roof and start screaming.
Right in front of you!
It’s Cornelia!
The little girl who disappeared years ago!
You’re going crazy!
Cornelia slowly raises a finger to her lips.
Shhhhh…
He doesn’t understand.
No one does.
Tears stream down my face.
She’s right.
They don’t understand.
Okay, I’m getting your mom!
No! Don’t, Grant!
He runs inside the house.
Let him go.
We don’t need him.
I can help you.
Just trust me.
I nod, with tears in my eyes.
I do.
I don’t know why…
But I trust you.
The little girl reaches out her hand…
And smiles at me.
Grant and my mom crawl out onto the roof.
Emily! What are you doing?
Get down from there!
Emily! Stop!
They yell at me…
But I’m not listening to them.
Cornelia leads me forward.
Now I want you to make a wish.
I reach my hand out.
No!
No!!
Repeat after me.
I grab her soft hand.
I raise my bare foot into the air.
My mom and Grant scream.
And then Cornelia turns back and looks at me.
She can see my mom and Grant…
But they can’t see her.
A sad, sweet expression comes over her face.
Go back to them.
Why are you here?
I got in a fight with my parents…
And I made a wish that I could disappear.
I got my wish…
But then I couldn’t undo it.
I got so lonely.
You’re the only one who’s ever been able to see me.
I wanted you to be with me forever.
But now I can see…
That that wouldn’t be fair to you.
I promise I won’t bother you again.
Enjoy the rest of your life, Emily…
And don’t EVER wish you could disappear.
I can feel my mom and Grant pulling me backward.
I turn and fall into my mother’s embrace.
I look across the roof to where Cornelia was.
She’s gone.
And I know that this time…
She’s never coming back.
