The List - Episode 1
by Calla Gordon
The creepiest thing just happened.
What?
I was taking out the trash…
When I heard a crash inside my house. I ran in…
And found the flower vase on the kitchen windowsill totally shattered.
Did Whiskers knock it over by accident?
That’s what I assumed…
But then I found something when I was cleaning up the glass.
What?
A folded note on the windowsill.
It’s a list of names.
Every name on the list is crossed out, except for the last one…
My name.
That IS creepy!
Right?!
Have you asked your roommate about it?
Matt’s out of town all weekend…
He’s visiting his brother in Newport.
Wait a minute…
You NEVER have flowers.
Who got you those, anyway?
Matt.
Matt got you flowers?!
I KNEW you two weren’t just friends!
It’s not like that…
It was a birthday gift.
Ok, I’m sorry, but…
Guys don’t buy flowers for girls they aren’t interested in.
Well, I’ve made it clear to Matt that I’m NOT interested…
And he respects that.
Anyway, this is totally beside the point…
What you think this list means?!
Do you recognize any of the names on it?
No. They’re strangers.
Send me a picture.
Sasha texts Tess a photo of the list.
Well, it’s all women’s names…
I’m going to do some more digging.
Give me a minute.
5 minutes later
OMG Sasha, are your doors locked?
Yes…why?
And the windows? Are they locked too?
I don’t know. You’re freaking me out.
What’s going on?
Check! Now!
OK, OK…
The one in the kitchen was open, but it’s shut and locked now.
Now tell me what’s going on.
I just Googled the other names on the list…
And except for you…
Every single person on it is DEAD!
WHAT?! Please tell me you’re joking…
I wish I were.
What happened to them?
One had an allergic reaction…
And one drowned in a boating accident. But Sasha…
4 of these women were murdered!
OMG! Why would my name be on this list?
I have a theory.
This is going to sound crazy, but…
What if the allergic reaction and drowning weren’t accidents?
What if whoever wrote this list…
KILLED all these women?
And what if you’re the next person they want to cross out?!
OMG, there could be some deranged hit man after me!
Not to scare you, but…
It’s possible the hit man knocked over the vase trying to climb in your window.
He could be inside your house RIGHT NOW.
That’s it. I’m calling the police.
Just then, Sasha hears a creak.
She freezes, her heart pounding in her ears.
She listens…
And just when she thinks she imagined the noise…
She hears it again.
Footsteps.
Someone is inside her house.
Sasha frantically looks around the kitchen for a weapon…
Then grabs a knife from the block on the counter—
Just as a shadowed figure walks into the room.
Sasha screams.
Sash, what are you doing with a knife?!
Her roommate Matt holds up his hands, terrified.
Sasha blows out a breath and lowers the knife.
Oh my god, it’s just you.
What’s going on?
I thought you were an intruder.
Matt laughs, relieved.
I’m sorry. I guess I should have told you I was coming home early…
What’s that you’re holding?
Check it out. It’s this weird list I found…
Sasha hands Matt the piece of paper.
She tells him her and Tess’s theory about the hit man.
Matt’s eyes widen…
Before he lets out a big belly laugh.
What’s so funny?
I’m sorry. I’m not laughing at you.
I can see why you would think it was a hit man…
But Sasha…
I wrote this list.
What?!
It’s just a dumb list of all the girls I ever had a crush on.
He blushes.
Oh. Well, now I feel stupid.
Don’t! I’m the one who should be embarrassed.
Sasha smiles weakly.
Hey, want to put on a movie?
Sure. I don’t think I can sleep after all that drama.
OK, I’ll make popcorn…
You go pick something to watch.
Sasha goes to the living room and settles onto the couch.
Just then, her phone dings with another message.
OMG, Sasha, I just discovered something REALLY SCARY.
What?
I did some more digging…
It turns out Matt knows at least 5 of the victims on that lists!
He used to work at a movie theater with Tara Simpson…
And he went to school with Kelly Parson.
There’s even a girl on here who was murdered 9 years ago, when she was 14…
And she lived next door to Matt!
It’s too big of a coincidence, Sash…
Matt HAD to have been involved!
Tess, stop. There’s an explanation.
What?
Matt wrote the list.
He admitted it?
It’s not what you think…
It’s just a list of all the girls he’s had a crush on.
OK, but…
You don’t think it’s weird that all of his crushes are now DEAD?
And that THEIR NAMES ARE CROSSED OFF?
Matt isn’t a murderer, Tess.
He’s a nice guy.
Just then, Matt enters the room with a big bowl of popcorn.
I’ll talk to you later. We’re watching a movie.
Sasha silences her phone as Matt sits next to her on the couch.
For the first half hour of the movie, things are normal.
But then Matt slings his arm around the couch…
And begins toying with the ends of Sasha’s hair.
Sasha sighs.
Matt, I told you…
I just want to be friends.
Why?
I just don’t feel that way about you.
I explained this before…
When you gave me those flowers.
Matt huffs, his jaw going cold and hard.
Well explain again, because I don’t get it.
You date all these losers…
But not me.
Do I smell or something?
Sasha gapes at her roommate.
He’s always been so friendly…
But right now…
He’s looking at her like he hates her.
Tess’s texts come flashing back to her mind.
She knows she shouldn’t…
But she can’t help the words that tumble out of her mouth.
How come you never told me about Kelly Parson?
What?
She was your crush…
And she was murdered.
I don’t know…it never came up.
What about Tara Simpson, and all the others on that list?
You had crushes on them too…
And they’re all dead.
So what, you think that list is all my murder victims or something?
No, of course not!
But even Sasha can hear the lie in her voice.
Matt’s eyes narrow.
Actually, you remind me of Kelly.
She led me on, too…
Matt, I’ve NEVER led you on.
I’ve been very clear—
You’re a flirt. A tease.
Sasha shakes her head.
So, is that what this list really is?
Do you kill women who reject you?
She expects Matt to deny it.
But instead…
He smiles coldly.
I kill women who lie to me.
Sasha’s stomach drops.
I-I think I should go.
She starts to get up…
But Matt grabs her arm.
She yanks her arm away—
And runs toward the front door—
But Matt is too fast.
He blocks the exit.
It didn’t have to be like this, Sasha.
We could have been so good together!
Sasha turns around and runs into the kitchen.
She races to the window and slams it open.
She’s almost through…
When a hand clamps around her ankle.
She screams as she’s pulled roughly back inside.
Matt pushes her to the floor and locks a hand around her throat.
I’m thinking a horrible kitchen fire for you…
You always were a terrible cook.
Matt, NO!
He takes a lighter out of his pocket…
Just as the front door bursts open.
An officer runs into the room, his gun drawn.
Police, put your hands up!
Matt jumps off Sasha.
This isn’t what it looks like, I swear!
No, Matt…this is EXACTLY what it looks like.
Sasha’s eyes widen as Tess walks in the doorway.
Sasha, are you okay?
Yes! But why…how…?
How did you know to come?
I KNEW Matt had murdered those girls…
And you weren’t responding to my texts!
I couldn’t just leave you alone with a killer…
So I called the police.
As Matt is handcuffed…
Sasha stands up and hugs her friend.
Matt glares at them both.
You can’t prove anything.
I’ll be out by morning.
Sasha turns around.
Officer? I have something you might need.
She walks over to the policeman…
And hands him the list.
