The Moon is a Flirt
by Eric Levin
Hey gurl, you must be the sun cause I’m in your orbit
Like I haven’t heard that one before
You light up my day, baby
Oh please
You don’t believe me?
That’s a literal truth
But also metaphorically representative of how much I dig you
I’m sure you say that to all the stars
I’ve never seen a star like you
You’re the center of my galaxy, baby
My love for you burns hotter than magma
Yeah right
I like your freckles
They’re sunspots
Now I like them even more
You’re a nice enough moon…
Uh oh what’s the but
Are you seeing someone?
Is it Mercury?
No
Mars?
I’m not seeing anyone
Then there’s hope!
You’re radiating hope at me, girl
Hallelujah!
I’m sorry, moon, but it would never work out between us
Why not?
Don’t say you’re not attracted
You’ve kept me in your orbit
I couldn’t leave you if I tried
I burn planets that get too close
I don’t want to hurt you, Moon
You seem nice, and I’m destructive
But I love you, Sun
You love the idea of me
I love the entire hydrogen and helium you
I feel it in my core
Do you really feel nothing?
I didn’t say “nothing”
But we don’t really know each other
We spent so long staring at each other since the Big Bang
And stares across a galaxy aren’t solid foundation for a relationship
But we’re star-crossed lovers!
Like Romeo and Juliet!
Not sure that’s a good comparison…
Didn’t they take their lives?
But before that, they lived passionately!
And so will we!
Galactic lovers!
Uh, no. Galactic neighbors
Who become lovers! What a story!
Moon, I don’t even know you
I’m Moon
I’m 4.5 billion years old
I have a core, mantle and crust
And I’m Earth’s only natural satellite
Hello Moon
Now tell me about yourself
How is being sun?
It’s a living, I guess
Sometimes it’s boring because I can’t move without disrupting gravity
How is being moon?
Dizzying
I’m always revolving
I’ve seen you dancing with Earth
Earth and I are just friends
Are you jealous of Earth?
I never said that
Why would I be jealous of Earth?
I’ve got my craters set on nobody but you, Sun
I remain skeptical
I think you live a solitary life out of fear
But deep down you long for emotional intimacy
This is our first time texting, you don’t know me
I tried having a relationship with Mercury. It didn’t work out
What happened?
He felt overburdened by my radiation
He said, “This is what I get for dating a Sun”
Mercury seems like an asshole
He was right though
I’m too much. I’m capable of dangerous things
Like what?
Like hurting human eyes if they stare at me too long
Or burning people under my rays
But you don’t mean to
I don’t mean to, but I still do it
You should direct your love to a more deserving star
There are some constellations that would treat you nicely
I don’t want constellations, I want you!
And what of the harm I cause?
Your rays don’t just harm people
You provide heat, dry firewood and help ecosystems
You’re just saying that
I’m serious!
You allow the seasons to cycle
Winter
Fall
Spring
Summer
I suppose you’re right…
And you know what else?
You let people SEE me
I’d be in darkness without you
You won’t feel bad that we have to stay apart?
I’m used to long-distance relationships
I was previously with an asteroid
Why’d you break up?
She was unpredictable
One minute she’s all over me, the next she’s hightailing it to Jupiter
I see
Plus we’ll get to see each other on the eclipse!
So what are your thoughts, my darling ball of light?
Oh please
That’s what you are! Do you deny it?
I’ve never been called darling before
You never met your loving moon before
Now you’re my loving moon?
I’ve always been your loving moon
Will you give us a chance?
Moon…
Please?
I need to know soon, I’m going into orbit
If you insist…
Yes! You won’t regret this
I’ll love you with the heat of a sun, but the depths of a moon!
I love you too, Moon
See you on the next orbit
