The Stone Girl - Episode 1
by Grey Kieffer
I’ve been sitting for 16 hours…
In this wooden crate.
I’ve been halfway around the world.
Literally.
And I need to go to the bathroom.
My name is Piper…
But international law enforcement…
Knows me as The Stone Girl.
I’m a jewel thief.
One of the best.
Most kids my age…
Are thinking about college.
I’m thinking about diamonds.
They’re a girl’s best friend, you know.
It sounds pretty quiet out there.
Maybe it’s time to get out.
I reach for my trusty pocket knife…
And pry open the lid with a crack.
The storage room is full of goodies.
Paintings, sculptures, artifacts…
And of course, precious stones.
I creep past a Picasso.
Darn, if only it were smaller.
And there it is:
The jewelry safe.
It has a thumbprint scanner.
But I came prepared—
I lifted the manager’s thumbprint…
Off a coffee mug yesterday.
Nobody ever suspects a girl like me.
The safe beeps and opens up.
Bingo…
There’s a black velvet bag, full of diamonds.
And they’re even more beautiful…
Than I imagined.
I slip the satchel into my backpack.
And now it’s time for the final touch.
I pull out a uniform:
St. Mary’s Prep School…
They’re taking a tour today.
I stroll into the hallway casually.
The security guard sees me…
Hey!
You can’t be back here!
Sorry, sir!
I’m lost.
Where’s the bathroom?
He looks me over.
…Down the hall to the left.
Just in time.
The school tour passes by.
I slip into the crowd…
And pretend to be normal for an hour.
With another job taken care of…
I fly to Los Angeles to meet my handler.
He sets up all my biggest heists.
Sal’s the best in the business.
He’s a little rough around the edges…
But we work well together.
I arrive to find Sal sitting behind a huge desk.
Well look who’s here!
My favorite little thief.
Your BEST thief.
I set the bag of diamonds on the table.
Merry Christmas, Sal.
Wow, look at these babies shine.
Fine work, kid.
Here’s your cut.
He reaches across the table…
And hands me an envelope.
It’s heavy with hundred dollar bills.
Thanks, big guy.
I sit at the table counting my thousands.
You ready for the next one?
I peek up from the cash.
That fast, huh?
I know it’s kind of last minute…
But business is business, right?
I see a twinkle in Sal’s eye.
He’s never led me wrong before.
This is a very BIG job.
The world's biggest sapphire…
It’s being gifted…
To the Queen of England.
My heart flutters with excitement.
You’re going to intercept it.
Tell me more.
The night before the transport…
We’ll stash you in the armored truck.
Easy peasy.
I like the sound of it.
There’s only one catch.
What’s that?
You’ll need a driver.
I don’t work with anyone, Sal.
It’s a 2-man job, trust me.
No way.
Fine, if you don’t want it…
I can’t help myself.
I need to see the world’s biggest sapphire.
Who’s the other guy?
It’s not a guy, it’s a kid.
What kind of kid?
The kind who drives getaway cars.
Fine, I’m in.
That’s my girl!
You’ll meet him tonight.
Try to be nice.
I smile at the old man, and off I go.
Later that night…
I stand on a bridge overlooking the water.
It’s quiet out here…
Until an engine revs and tires squeal.
A red Mustang screeches to a halt.
The window rolls down.
You must be Piper…
And you’re Axel.
I look the boy over.
You’re prettier than I thought.
Don’t let it distract you.
He smiles at me. He’s pretty cute himself.
I hop into the passenger seat.
The ride is quiet for a while.
I can’t get a read on this kid…
What’s your story?
What’s it to you?
Just curious.
Curiosity killed the cat.
I’m more of a dog.
I can’t help but laugh.
What’s YOUR story?
Never had any parents.
I learned to steal early.
It’s maybe the only thing I’m good at.
I look at him from the passenger seat.
I don’t know…
I’ve never tried anything else.
We’re a lot alike, you know.
I never had anyone, either.
Sometimes I wonder…
What it would be like…
If I had someone watching out for me.
We pull to a stop.
We’re at the armored truck security building.
It’s nice working with someone else.
Never done it before.
Seeya in the morning.
Axel looks strangely conflicted…
Wait…
I have to tell you something.
Sal is setting you up.
He’s been compromised.
What are you talking about?
I have friends in the police force.
I was going to take the sapphire…
And leave you stranded…
But you’re right…
It is nice working with someone else.
How can I trust you?
He looks into my eyes.
I worked alone for a long time.
I know how it feels…
To not have anybody.
I think I can help you.
And I think you can help me.
This is such a strange feeling.
I can’t take my eyes off him.
I’m drawn to him, like a diamond.
I like you, Piper.
We’re a lot alike, you know.
For the first time since I can remember…
I feel like I have a friend.
Don’t walk in there.
Walk away.
I think about it for a moment.
No, I’m doing it.
He looks at me like I’m crazy.
They’ll be looking for the truck.
But I won’t be on the truck.
We’ll take it tonight.
How are we going to do that?
With 2 people.
I reach out my hand…
He shakes it.
The following morning…
An empty jewelry box will be put on the truck.
Cops will set up roadblocks.
Sal will call me to check in.
And when the cops rip open the door…
All they’ll see is my ringing phone.
And then everyone will know…
It was the work of The Stone Girl.
And she wasn’t working alone.
