Two or One
by Damian McGlothlin
Where am I?
What have you done to me?
Please remain calm. You have been selected to be a part of scientific experiment.
You’ve abducted me! Where the hell am I?! What is this room?
That will come in due time.
I cannot tell you who I am, but I am a scientist who has many unanswered questions.
And that is why you’re here. To help me solve these questions.
What? Why is the door locked?
What does this computer have to do with anything?
It’s purely for confidential purposes so that you do not learn my identity.
Okay. So tell me what the hell is going on.
Let’s begin with an introduction.
There are two theories I aim to test at this compound.
What are they?
Here is the first question that you should consider: how many men can force themselves to kill another person?
And not for joy, but rather, for the sake of morality.
Not many
What are the odds that I can find a person who is willing to kill, because it is the right thing to do in a certain situation.
What do you mean by “in a certain situation?”
We will get to that. But what are the odds?
One out of ten?
One out of a hundred?
You want odds on this? You are insane!
No. I’m just a scientist looking for answers.
And here is the second theory
How many lives are worth the life of a certain individual?
I don’t understand.
I’ll put it in clearer terms.
What is the number of random people, people you do not know, you would let be murdered before you would let yourself die?
I can’t answer that. I have no idea.
Well let me explain the conundrum that I believe arises
If you say 100 people, then I might ask: why not 99 then?
And you will agree that there is not a difference, and then I will again ask: when not 98 then?
Why not 0? You ever think of that??
You would also agree that the number of 98 people is not any different from 99 people.
This will keep happening all the way until we get to two people.
Why two?
Once we get to two people, I would naturally ask: “why not one person then?”
Well there are greater odds that I will be more selfless in my lifetime than any random person I would select.
Exactly. So we would stop at two people.
So for this theory, I think that two is the proper number to test.
What test?
I’m not going to be involved in this you know.
Now for the combination of these two theories.
So in order to test both these theories at once, I give you two options right now.
And they are?
You can choose the option of me going into a nearby town and killing two random people.
What!? No. Absolutely not!
Let me finish.
You do not have to watch or even see these people.
You will have no connection to these murders whatsoever.
Are you crazy? There’s no way!
Keep listening.
The other option is in which you have to kill only one person.
I’m done. I’m not doing this.
For this option, you must murder this person with your own two hands.
Neither! I’m not going to do this.
No way.
You don’t have a choice.
I will choose the first option for you if you don’t make decision.
Well I’m leaning towards that one anyway.
You’re sick.
Is that your final decision?
I don’t know. I just don’t know
I need an answer.
You know the implications. No response is still an answer.
No. The first one is easier,
I just…
I just live couldn’t live with myself
And?
I don’t know. I have to do this.
I don’t want to. But I have to.
Correct
I’ll go with the second one.
I’ll kill one person
As you wish. The door to your left is now unlocked.
Once you enter this room, you will find the person that you must kill.
Who is it? I have to know before I open that door
I can’t tell you.
Is it someone I know?
If you don’t the task, you will have chosen to first option by default.
Okay, I’m going to open the door.
Wait, there’s no one in here. There’s just a gun on the floor…
Good luck.
