With Friends Like That - Episode 1
by Calla Gordon
Thunder rumbles outside.
Audrey rolls over in bed, reaching for Jaxon…
But her hands meet empty sheets.
She sits up and searches the dark room.
But she’s all alone.
She can’t believe it—
Jaxon left!
Irritation surges through her.
Just last night she told Jaxon she loved him.
And he left in the middle of the night like she meant nothing to him.
She grabs her phone, ready to tell him exactly what’s on her mind in a text—
But something stops her short:
The background picture on her phone…
Is a photo of her sleeping.
In the pic, her hair is twisted into an elaborate updo.
Just the way she was wearing it at the party last night…
And the way it still is now…
Because she was too busy running her hands all over Jaxon…
To take the pins out before bed.
Audrey touches her hair.
Now, in addition to her irritation…
She feels a little creeped out that Jaxon would take her picture like that.
She texts him:
You couldn’t even wait until it was light to leave?
I have to work early…
And I left my uniform at home.
Right…
So how come you shoved me away last night at the party?
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
You know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.
I was whispering in your ear…
And then when Kat walked into the room…
You pushed me away.
Kat is my best friend…
And Jaxon’s ex-girlfriend.
Kat says she is okay with the new situation, though.
I’m not into PDA, that’s all.
Audrey rolls her eyes.
He certainly seemed to be into PDA when he was with Kat.
The truth is obvious.
Jaxon just doesn’t like Audrey as much as she likes him…
Or as much as he liked Kat.
But she doesn’t want to have this fight at three in the morning.
Whatever, Jax.
What’s up with that picture, anyway?
What picture?
The picture you took of me sleeping!
It was totally creepy, by the way.
I didn’t take any pictures of you.
Very funny, Jax.
It was obviously you.
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Look, I need to get a few hours of sleep before work.
I’ll talk to you later.
Audrey looks around her dark bedroom.
If it wasn’t Jaxon who took her picture…
Then who was it?
That’s when Audrey hears it:
A clatter in the kitchen downstairs.
She freezes…
Straining to hear past the rain and thunder…
But all she can hear is her heartbeat in her ears.
Audrey turns on the flashlight on her phone…
Then tiptoes to the door.
She takes a deep breath.
Then opens the door and peers into the dark hall.
Nothing.
No one.
Audrey steps into the hall.
Aiming the flashlight ahead…
She creeps down the narrow stairs…
Then toward the kitchen.
Suddenly, a dark shadow moves in the corner.
Audrey screams…
Then blows out a relieved breath.
It was just the shadow of a tree on the wall…
She turns…
And slams into a body.
Audrey yelps and scrabbles back—
Her phone clattering across the kitchen tile.
A dark figure steps forward…
And moonlight hits the intruder’s face.
Wait — it’s someone she recognizes.
Kat! What are you doing here?
I was worried about you.
How did you get in?
I have a spare key, remember?
Kat flashes a key.
An uncomfortable feeling worms through Audrey’s chest.
Wait a minute, why were you worried about me?
Jaxon told me you were acting strange.
He did? You talked to Jaxon?
Am I not allowed to talk to my ex-boyfriend?
We did date for THREE YEARS, you know.
No, of course you can talk to Jaxon.
I’m just surprised is all.
Kat steps closer…
What’s wrong, Audrey?
You seem nervous.
Audrey swallows hard.
Well, yeah…someone was in my house.
I didn’t know it was you at first.
I thought it was an intruder.
That DOES sound frightening.
Kat runs her fingers along the counter…
Then pauses near the big butcher block.
She plucks out a knife.
What are you doing?
If someone is in your house, we should have a weapon, right?
Kat holds up the knife.
The sharp tip gleams in the moonlight.
Put down the knife, Kat.
You’re making me uncomfortable.
Well we wouldn’t want you to feel UNCOMFORTABLE, would we?
What’s that supposed to mean?
Kat steps closer…
And Audrey backs up a step.
Maybe it’s the look in Kat’s eyes…
She’s afraid of her.
But that doesn’t make sense.
Kat wouldn’t hurt her. Would she?
Did it ever occur to you to think about how I might feel?
Kat cocks her head.
Silence hangs in the air.
And Audrey realizes:
Kat *does* mind that she's dating Jaxon.
Look, I’m so sorry, Kat.
This thing with Jaxon…
It just sort of happened.
You know how persuasive he can be.
Interesting…
That’s not what Jaxon said.
Kat steps closer.
And Audrey steps back again, bumping into the kitchen table.
Jaxon said YOU pursued HIM.
He said you told him to dump me.
Said I was boring…
And that I didn’t appreciate him like you would.
Audrey can feel heat rise in her cheeks.
Th-that’s not true!
He’s lying!
Kat holds the knife up to the moonlight…
Pretending to inspect the blade.
It doesn’t matter, though, does it?
You both betrayed me.
Audrey swallows hard.
I thought you were okay with it, Kat.
Well, I’m not.
Why do you have that knife?
Wait. Was it YOU who took that picture of me sleeping?
Kat smiles at Audrey.
But her eyes are cold.
I’ve suffered for weeks…
Knowing that you two were together.
I couldn’t sleep…
I couldn’t eat…
So kill me for wanting to have a little bit of fun before it’s all over.
Over?
Audrey has heard enough.
Kat is blocking the way to the front door…
So Audrey bolts back up the stairs.
She runs into her bedroom…
Slams the door…
And locks it.
Audrey breathes hard and fast.
Footsteps creak on the stairs.
Then she hears a faint scraping sound right outside the door.
Audrey realizes it’s the sound of the knife gliding against the wood.
Open the door, Audrey
It’s just me, your best friend.
Please, don’t do this, Kat! I’m sorry!
I think it’s a little late for apologies, don’t you?
Audrey looks around for her phone—
Then remembers she dropped it in the kitchen.
She’s trapped.
The doorknob jiggles.
Kat is trying to pick the lock.
Audrey runs to the window and pushes it open.
It’s a three-story drop the ground…
But she has no choice.
Maybe she can flag down a passerby.
She climbs out onto the roof.
Not so fast, Audrey!
Audrey looks back.
Kat is climbing out of the bedroom window.
Audrey moves faster.
But the shingles are wet with rain…
And she slides dangerously toward the gutter.
She screams for help.
But her voice is lost in the storm.
Audrey looks back.
Kat is RIGHT THERE.
The knife glints in the moonlight.
Kat lunges toward her…
Audrey rolls and dodges her…
Then strikes out her foot—
Tripping Kat.
Kat vaults over the edge of the roof…
Disappearing into the darkness below.
Shock pours through Audrey’s body.
Her best friend is dead.
Tears spring to her eyes.
She didn’t mean for any of this to happen.
Then Audrey hears a voice.
Slowly, Audrey crawls to the edge of the roof.
And sees Kat hanging from the gutter.
Help me up, Audrey!
This got out of hand.
You can have Jaxon all to yourself.
You’re my best friend.
We should never have let a guy come between us.
I don’t want Jaxon. I want YOU.
Audrey reaches down a hand.
And hauls with all her might.
Kat scrambles back onto the roof.
When she’s safely up, she scoots far from the edge.
And smiles at Audrey.
Thank you, Audrey.
I meant it, too…
You can have Jaxon all to yourself. Just like I promised.
You’re a good friend, Kat.
Audrey smiles back.
Unfortunately…
I never promised you that Jaxon would be alive.
Audrey’s smile drops from her face.
W-what?
Kat pulls a cellphone out of her pocket.
It’s Jaxon’s cell.
Oh my god…
Why do you have Jaxon’s phone?
Horror washes over her.
Was it YOU who was texting me earlier?
Kat nods.
Jaxon never left your house, Audrey.
The poor guy just wanted to use the bathroom.
He got QUITE the surprise:
A knife in the back.
Kat stands up.
Before Audrey can react…
Kat shoves Audrey in the chest…
HARD.
Audrey screams…
Her arms pinwheeling as she plunges over the roof.
Best of luck to the happy couple!
