Dating App Mishap - Episode 3
by Rebecca Brooks
Lucy walks into Red Rocks and scans the bar, looking for Raul.
When she feels a hand on the small of her back, she turns.
THANK YOU, TINDER GODS.
He’s even hotter in person, and he smells divine.
You must be Lucy!
The one and only.
I have to say…
You look stunning.
If I hadn’t planned on meeting you, I would have had to talk to you anyway.
And I would have definitely responded.
When I know what I want, I go after it.
I guess that’s a good thing.
You guess?
As long as what you want is me.
Oh, sweetheart. As if there’s any question.
He winks, and Lucy grins.
Yup, he was definitely worth busting out her favorite red dress for.
What can I get you?
Whiskey, neat.
I’ll make it two. Want to grab a table?
When he brings over their drinks, he brushes her hand and leans in close.
She feels a shiver up her spine.
She’s not sure how much they have in common.
But the chemistry is 10/10.
So what were you up to today?
I slept in, since someone kept me up late last night.
Sorry about that!
I’m not.
Wow, I already love making you blush.
Lucky for you it’s pretty easy.
What did you do after I ruined your sleep?
Not much. Hit the weight room, met a client—
Raul keeps talking.
When the door opens behind him, Lucy glances up —
And almost chokes on her drink.
It’s Adam.
What the hell is he doing here???
She’s about to wave. But when he sees her, his jaw tightens.
He walks straight past her…
And over to a gorgeous woman sitting alone at the end of the bar.
Are you okay?
Sorry, what?
Your face just got, like, green.
Are you feeling alright?
Yes! Sorry, um…
I’ve been really tired.
Maybe we should order some food.
That’d be great.
Be right back, I’ll grab a menu.
Lucy pulls out her phone and frantically texts Adam while Raul is gone.
What are you doing here!!!!!
Across the bar, she sees Adam’s eyes flick over to her.
He says something to his date, then pulls out his phone.
I could ask you the same question.
I’m on a date! Obviously!
Well, same. Obviously!
Fuck me.
That guy you’re with clearly wants to.
What’s wrong with his neck?
They’re called MUSCLES, Adam. It’s—
She drops her phone in her lap when Raul returns with their drinks.
Here you go.
Thanks!
Lucy can barely concentrate on the menu.
She and Adam keep making eye contact, then looking away.
She has to play it cool.
But what’s he doing?
What did he just say to make his date laugh so much?
And how does she get her hair so shiny?!?!?
Eventually, Raul looks over his shoulder.
Hey, do you know someone here?
What?
That couple over there — you keep looking at them. Do you know them?
No, not at all!
I just — I really like her dress.
Listen, are you sure you’re okay?
Would you excuse me for a second?
I’m going to run to the bathroom.
Take your time, I’ll get us some appetizers.
She heads to the back of the bar, fuming.
Sure enough, Adam follows.
When he knocks on the bathroom door, she lets him in and locks it behind her.
What are you doing?
Stop ruining my date!
What are you talking about?
I actually like this this guy, and you’re ruining it.
I’m not doing anything!
You keep looking at me.
You keep looking at ME!
How could you possibly bring a date here?
Sorry, I didn’t see the sign on the door announcing that this was your spot.
I didn’t even know you had a date tonight.
When it became clear we weren’t meeting up, I made other plans.
On Tinder.
Yes, on Tinder.
Looks like my tips to improve your profile worked out.
I guess they did.
And I don’t understand why you sound so pissed about it.
I’m not pissed!
Then why are you yelling at me!
I’M NOT YELLING!
Lucy clears her throat, then tries again.
I’m not yelling.
No…now you’re just folding your arms and staring daggers at me with murderous rage.
I can’t believe you showed up at a date you knew I was excited about.
Carrying on with some other woman right in front of me!
Okay, first of all…
It’s a coincidence that we both wound up here.
And I’m not CARRYING ON.
I’m on a first date, just like you are.
Should I have stayed home twiddling my thumbs while you had all the fun?
That’s not what I mean.
I’m allowed to go on dates, Lucy. Just like you are.
I know that!
I’m not mad about it. I’m just—
She thinks about the dark hint of stubble in the pic he sent her.
Now it’s shaved clean.
She doesn’t know what to say.
You’re just what?
I don’t know.
She’s really pretty.
You should go home with her.
Lucy steps back against the door.
Adam takes a step closer.
He’s so close to her, and she has nowhere to go.
Are you sure that’s really what you want?
I don’t know.
No.
You told me last night that you didn’t want to date me.
I never said that.
When you said you’d swipe right on my Tinder profile—
If we weren’t already friends. Yeah, I know.
But we are.
So.
So.
They stand there for a beat, looking at each other.
Then he kisses her.
Wow.
Wow.
He kisses her again.
She doesn’t know how long they stay like that. It could be minutes. Hours.
Suddenly, there’s banging on the door, and a voice shouting.
A voice that she knows.
Lucy, are you in there?
Lucy?
Open up!
